How we picked

We started with the 57 swim spas that publish both an open swim length and a structure warranty. Pool systems and hot tub hybrids are left out. Each pick had to clear two bars:

  1. Structure warranty of at least 10 years, from the maker's warranty document.
  2. A real swim current: a propeller, a paddlewheel or jets on more than one swim pump. 2 swim spas with a single fitness jet pump drop out here. How swim currents differ.

The rest are ranked within their length band (under 14 feet, 14 to 15 feet and 16 feet and longer) by open swim length, the water between the current and whatever sits behind you. Ties go to the stronger current type, then the longer structure warranty, then the lower running cost. We show the top swim spa in each band and the top one from a second brand.

Running cost can't be a bar: only 44 of the 186 swim spas have a matched California listing to work it out from. We show it where we have it. No American Whirlpool, Artesian Spas, Bullfrog Spas, Coast Spas, Dynasty Spas, LPI, Marquis or Master Spas swim spa publishes an open swim length, so none can be ranked here.

What makes one swim spa better than another?

The current and the room around it. A wide, smooth current lets you swim a full stroke; a narrow, bubbly one pushes you to one side. The open water has to fit you stretched out: a swimmer with arms overhead is longer than they are tall. For swimming laps, see the best swim spas for lap swimming.

If you want a hot tub at one end, see swim spas with a hot tub side. For every model and brand, see all swim spas and the swim spa buying guide. Two of the most-compared brands go head to head in Endless Pools vs Master Spas.

Common questions

What is the best swim spa?

For swimming, the one with the most open water and a current wide enough to swim against. In the longest size, the PDC Spas SX19 has 13 ft 4 in of open swim area. On a running display, hold your hand across the current: it should feel wide and even.

Which swim spa brands publish the most?

Open swim length is the number that matters most and the one most often missing: 73 of the 186 swim spas in our data publish it. American Whirlpool, Artesian Spas, Bullfrog Spas, Coast Spas, Dynasty Spas, LPI, Marquis and Master Spas don't publish it for any model.

Are there independent swim spa ratings or reviews?

We haven't found an independent test of swim spa currents. Our swim spa brand pages collect the complaint records and owner reviews we could find, and the buying guide explains the ten checks we look at.
