What does installation add?
The price of the spa is not the whole bill. A swim spa needs a pad built for its full weight, a dedicated 50 or 60 A circuit on most models, and a delivery path, sometimes for a crane. Hydropool, a swim spa maker, publishes these ranges. Its article doesn't say whether they are US or Canadian dollars, so use them as a checklist and get written quotes.
A swim spa can't be turned on its side the way a hot tub can: it goes in flat, so the way in has to be as wide as the spa, a median 92 in, or it goes over by crane.
What the pad and the wiring have to meet: swim spa foundation requirements and swim spa electrical requirements. Sinking it into the ground is covered on in-ground swim spas.
How much does a swim spa cost to run?
About $57 a month, or $687 a year, just to keep a typical swim spa warm with the cover on. Across the listings it runs from about $22 to $87 a month. Swimming, reheating after use and colder weather all add to it, and your own rate may differ from the national average.
How we worked it out
California lists how many watts a swim spa draws just holding temperature with its cover on, in 60°F air. Across the 44 models we could match, the median is 431 W, priced at the US average of 18.19¢ per kWh (January to July 2026). The lowest listing, the Artesian Spas TidalFit Active EP-12, is 163 W; the highest, the American Whirlpool MX5, is 655 W.
The guide to swim spa running costs explains what drives the figure, and is a swim spa worth it weighs the whole cost.
