What Master Spas is known for

The pitchDealers stress how the tubs are built: foam fills the cabinet, jets run off manifolds, flexible lines are glued and clamped, and the equipment is standard Balboa or Gecko controls with Waterway or Pentair jets. Master Spas says every tub gets a 100-point inspection during a water test.

Offered on: Michael Phelps Legend Series, Twilight Series, Clarity Spas, LH Series (not Getaway, which is rotomolded)

Our takeMaster Spas' parts catalogue carries stainless hose clamps and barbed manifolds under its own part numbers, and independent sellers stock its control and jet parts. The trade-off is that a leak buried in full foam costs more to find and fix.

Who else has it: Full foam is common (Artesian, Sundance, Dimension One). Clamping is not: Artesian dropped clamps on its main runs in 2019, and most makers don't say how their joints are made.

Often said, not trueRival knock: Master Spas jets can't be tuned one at a time. The 2026 Legend manual says most jets adjust by turning the face and most can be switched on or off individually; the exceptions are the fixed-nozzle Master Blaster and the air controls, each shared by one or two seats or jet groups.

Partly trueBuilt in its own Indiana plantEvery Master Spas hot tub comes out of a 614,000 sq ft plant on a 45-acre Fort Wayne campus.

The pitchEvery Master Spas hot tub comes out of a 614,000 sq ft plant on a 45-acre Fort Wayne campus. Salespeople add that it is the world's largest swim spa maker and the largest hot tub maker that builds all of its spas in the USA.

Our takeThe plant is real; trade press covered a $15.3 million expansion in 2018. But no production data backs either 'largest' title, the tubs use imported as well as US parts, and a 2025 company post says its saunas are made in Fort Wayne while the site footer says saunas are only distributed.

Who else has it: Many brands also build in the US, such as Bullfrog in Utah, Cal Spas in California and PDC in Pennsylvania. The 'largest' titles are self-awarded, and LPI calls itself the country's number-one hot tub maker.

Partly trueFew othersCopper-zinc mineral filter standardEvery Master Spas hot tub ships with EcoPur Charge, a filter core that releases small amounts of copper and…2 catches

The pitchEvery Master Spas hot tub ships with EcoPur Charge, a filter core that releases small amounts of copper and zinc to hold back bacteria and algae, so owners need fewer chemicals. The company calls it exclusive and patented.

Our takeIt is real and standard, but Master Spas gives no chemical-reduction figure, cites no independent test or EPA registration, and you still run chlorine or bromine. Its own salt-system manual has owners swap EcoPur filters for plain ones, and the core is replaced about every six months.

Who else has it: Other brands' mineral options mostly use silver: Hot Spring's FreshWater Ag+, Dimension One's Vision cartridge and FROG cartridges at Bullfrog and Artesian. Master Spas' patents (US 10,612,258 and 11,697,945) cover the two-part filter housing that holds copper-zinc particles, not the minerals themselves.

The catchEcoPur Charge is a consumable: the core is replaced every six months, on top of the regular filters. The 2026 Legend manual says to replace the EcoPur element every 6 months and the standard filter about yearly. An independent parts seller lists the universal core at $64.85 and a three-filter Legend/Twilight set at $189.99. $64.85 per EcoPur Charge core (part X268532), about $130 a year; $189.99 for a Legend/Twilight three-filter set (independent seller, Sept 2026)

The catchIt narrows your sanitizer choices: Master Spas advises against bromine with EcoPur, and its own salt system requires pulling EcoPur for plain filters. The 2026 Legend manual says bromine isn't recommended with EcoPur filters because it can make a sanitizer residual hard to hold. The 2026 Master Clear manual tells owners to swap EcoPur mineral filters for standard ones, saying excess minerals hurt the salt system.

The catchMaster Spas' monthly running-cost figures assume 12-cent power, a closed cover, 60°F air and nobody using the tub, so real bills will usually be higher.

More of what Master Spas says about itself5
Partly trueMaster Blaster foot jetsA 28-nozzle cluster in the footwell runs off its own oversized pump, which Master Spas says pushes 200…1 catch

The pitchA 28-nozzle cluster in the footwell runs off its own oversized pump, which Master Spas says pushes 200 gallons a minute at the soles of your feet.

Offered on: Michael Phelps Legend Series, Twilight Series

Our takeThe feature is real, but no pump rating or test sits behind the 200 gpm figure, and Master Spas lists no horsepower for any pump. It comes only on Legend and Twilight, and the 2026 Twilight manual doesn't say which pump drives it.

Who else has it: Foot jets are near-universal; American Whirlpool, for one, has a foot dome and Foot Relief Zone. A large foot cluster on a separate pump is less common.

The catchThe foot jets don't get a pump of their own: in Master Spas' own pump diagrams the large footwell jets share a pump with a seat or lounge, usually through a diverter, so full foot pressure comes at that seat's expense. The 2026 Legend manual's diagrams (a 2019 revision) put the two footwell jets on pump 3's B side with a seat on its A side (MPL 700 and 900), and the 2026 Twilight manual puts them on pump 1's B side with the lounger on A (TS 7.2 and 8.2). The feature page's separate, oversized 200 gpm pump comes with no pump rating.

Partly trueFew othersSelf-testing salt system optionThe Master Clear option makes chlorine from a low level of dissolved salt.1 catch

The pitchThe Master Clear option makes chlorine from a low level of dissolved salt. Its Smart Cell checks the sanitizer and runs a cycle only when needed, and an app shows salt and chlorine status.

Offered on: optional on Michael Phelps Legend, Twilight (not TS 240X), Clarity and LH; not Getaway

Our takeThe manual confirms the cell senses sanitizer and cycles on its own. Owners still test pH and chlorine before each soak, shock weekly and replace the cell yearly; the cell's warranty is only 30 days (controller 1 year, parts only), and EcoPur filters must come out.

Who else has it: Few brands offer a factory salt system: Hot Spring and Caldera (FreshWater Salt, with FreshWater IQ sensing), Cal Spas (Cal Salt, on a timer) and Arctic Spas (Onzen, with Spa Boy sensing). Self-regulating chlorine also comes in FROG @ease SmartChlor cartridges used by Bullfrog and Artesian.

The catchThe Smart Cell is a roughly $350 yearly consumable with a 30-day, parts-only warranty, and hard water can wear it out sooner. The 2026 Master Clear manual says to replace the cell after about a year (sooner with hard water), warrants it for 30 days on parts only, and excludes scaling damage and shipping. Independent sellers list the cell at $349.99 to $350. $349.99–$350.00 per Smart Cell, about once a year (independent sellers, Sept 2026)

Partly trueFew othersLifetime-warranty polymer cabinetDuraMaster polymer skirting is low-maintenance, needs no staining, and carries a lifetime warranty.1 catch

The pitchDuraMaster polymer skirting is low-maintenance, needs no staining, and carries a lifetime warranty.

Our takeThe lifetime term is in the 2026 warranty, but it's parts only, for the original buyer, and void if the spa is sold or moved. The upgrade DreamStone skirting on Legend and Twilight gets only 5 years.

Who else has it: Most brands cover cabinets for 2 to 5 years (Hot Spring, Jacuzzi and Sundance 5; Artesian 2). Strong Spas' Premium Series also carries a lifetime cabinet warranty, with labor included.

The catchLifetime means parts only for the original buyer at the original address: you pay shipping and installation, bowing is excluded, and a sale or move ends the warranty. The 2026 Legend and Getaway warranties cover DuraMaster skirting against cracking or ripping for the life of the spa on parts only, call bowing normal, put shipping and installation on the buyer, and void the warranty on transfer of ownership or relocation.

Mostly marketingOnly Master SpasMichael Phelps's name on the flagshipThe top Legend Series carries Michael Phelps's name, and Master Spas says its seats were shaped from his body…1 catch

The pitchThe top Legend Series carries Michael Phelps's name, and Master Spas says its seats were shaped from his body measurements. The partnership began in 2010 and now also covers swim spas, cold tubs and saunas.

Offered on: Michael Phelps Legend Series

Our takeAn endorsement changes nothing you can measure. Legend's real extras (three pumps, a sealed ABS base, standard WiFi and 10/7/5-year terms) should be priced on their own, and seats shaped for one elite swimmer may not fit you, so sit in them at the showroom.

Who else has it: The Phelps deal is exclusive to Master Spas. Athlete tie-ins exist elsewhere, such as the Louis Smith signature line Cal Spas launched in the UK.

The catchThe Phelps name went on a Legend line Master Spas has sold since 1996, and his reported design input was his own body measurements for one contoured seat. He's 6 ft 4 in, so sit in that seat before you pay for it. Trade press on the 2017 relaunch says Master Spas used Phelps's seated dimensions (bottom to shoulder, shoulder to elbow, elbow to wrist) to shape a seat, and the company's own timeline dates the Legend Series to 1996. Phelps is 6 ft 4 in with a torso proportioned like a much taller man's, so sit in the seat at the showroom before paying for it.

Mostly marketingOnly Master SpasNeck seat with magnet therapyThe StressRelief seat aims jets at the neck and shoulders from above the waterline, and the Master Force…1 catch

The pitchThe StressRelief seat aims jets at the neck and shoulders from above the waterline, and the Master Force system sets magnets at neck and back pressure points. Master Spas says the magnets ease inflammation and improve circulation.

Offered on: Michael Phelps Legend Series, Twilight Series, Clarity Spas

Our takeThe neck jets are a real comfort feature, but the health claims ride on the magnets, and the NIH's complementary-health center says evidence does not support magnets for pain. It also warns magnets can interfere with pacemakers and insulin pumps; the 2026 Twilight manual we read has no magnet warning.

Who else has it: Above-water neck jets are common (American Whirlpool's Comfort Collar, Vita Spa's Neck Relief Station). The magnets are the exclusive part: Master Spas calls Master Force exclusive, and we found no other major brand selling magnet therapy.

The catchMagnet therapy is fringe science. Some people swear by it, but the evidence doesn't back the claims that magnets ease inflammation or improve circulation. If you wear a pacemaker or insulin pump, magnets may interfere with it, and Master Spas' 2026 manuals carry no warning about that. NIH's complementary-health center says evidence doesn't support magnets for pain and that magnets may interfere with pacemakers and insulin pumps. The text of the 2026 Legend and Twilight manuals contains no magnet warning.

What rivals and critics say4
  • A Bullfrog dealer argues Master Spas' fixed jets and manifold plumbing add hoses and fittings that can leak, and that the jets can't be rearranged the way Bullfrog's JetPaks can. Our check: Fair that a hose-per-jet manifold has many joints and that the jets are fixed in place. But Master Spas stocks stainless clamps for those joints, and neither brand publishes leak-rate data.
  • The same dealer says Master Spas' wood frame can rot over time, unlike a plastic frame. Our check: The frame is coated engineered wood with a coated toe-kick. The sealed ABS pan that keeps ground moisture away is standard only on Legend and optional on some Twilight models; we found no failure data either way.
  • Forum regulars have long called the magnet therapy a marketing gimmick. Our check: The science backs them: the NIH's complementary-health center says evidence does not support magnets for pain. The jets in the same seat are a separate, real feature.
  • PDC argues full-foam tubs hide defects and bury leaking plumbing, making repairs expensive. Our check: True that a leak inside full foam takes more digging to reach. Full foam also insulates well, and Master Spas publishes running-cost estimates from APSP-14 chamber tests while PDC publishes no efficiency test.
