Barbed, glued and clamped plumbing
The best hot tub plumbing is barbed, glued and clamped. Glue alone can slowly let go after years of hot water.

What it is
Behind the cabinet, a hot tub is a web of flexible hose running from the pumps to every jet, with one or two connections for each jet. Most of those hoses are pushed onto a barb: a plastic fitting with ridges around it that grip the inside of the hose.
Three things can hold a hose on a barb: the ridges themselves, glue, and a clamp. The best builds use all three. The hose goes over the barb, glue seals it, and a stainless steel clamp squeezes the hose down into the ridges so it can't creep off.
Why it matters
Glue alone works fine when the tub is new. The trouble is heat. The water sits at 100 degrees or more every day for years, which softens the hose, and warm PVC is weaker than cold: at 100°F, pipe keeps only about 62% of its pressure rating. Add the pump shoving water through every time the jets come on, and a glued joint can slowly work loose. PDC's own manual says its glued joints are stressed by heat cycles and pump pressure.
It doesn't fail all at once. It starts as a slow weep you won't see, soaking into the foam and the frame. By the time there's water under the tub, it's been leaking for a while.
Where the leak is decides the bill. If the plumbing is easy to reach, a tech splices the line for about $200. If it's buried in foam, they have to dig it out and re-foam it, and one Hot Spring owner was quoted $3,500. A stainless clamp on every joint is cheap insurance against that.
How makers do it
Barb, glue and stainless clamp
The good wayThe hose slides over the ridged barb with cement as a sealer, then a stainless band squeezes it into the ridges.
Hose glued into a smooth socket
AcceptableThe hose goes inside the fitting, and solvent cement fuses the two into one piece of plastic. There's nothing to clamp.
Glued onto the barb, no clamp
AvoidCement and the hose's own grip hold it on the barb. Artesian's main runs use spiral-reinforced hose glued this way since 2019.
In the showroom
- Read the warranty card for the no-leak plumbing term, and whether it includes labor.
- Check the spec sheet for full foam. Foam around the plumbing makes any leak cost more to reach.
- Ask to see the owner's manual. Some say how joints are made; PDC's says its plumbing is glued.
Ask the dealer
- Are the hoses on this model clamped at the barbs, or just glued?
- Is that the same on your cheapest line, or only on this one?
- If a jet line leaks in year six, who pays to dig out and replace the foam?
The details
Where the evidence gets complicated, how each brand does it, and the sources.
Where it gets complicated
Artesian says home spas run at low pressure and its spiral-reinforced hose grips hard enough without clamps. Nobody publishes leak rates to settle it. Foam matters as much: Arctic glues its hose but leaves it reachable, which can beat a clamped joint buried in foam.
