Cal Spas

A big Pomona factory that packs more jets, horsepower and options into a tub for the money, builds fast, and can sell you the grill island and fire pit too.

The long read: how the tubs are built, the complaint record, the warranty part by part, and the company’s history.

How it started

California Acrylic Industries showed miniature pools at a Pomona county fair in 1978. Interest in hot tubs led it to switch fully to spa production.

What Cal Spas is known for, and the catch

How it’s built

4 of 8 pass

Eight things that decide whether it lasts. Tap any for the detail.

Self-supporting shellFoam is an upgrade, so the shell holds up unfoamedPartly

Standard tubs get recycled denim batting in the cabinet walls, and full foam costs extra. The shell is a laminate backed with steel and wood, and the warranty covers it against collapse. Cal Spas has never shown how the seats and footwell are braced underneath.

Applies to: The six acrylic hot tub series (Patio, Patio Plus, Escape, Escape Plus, Escape X-Series, Platinum); not verified for the Swim or Deck series

Clamped plumbingBarbed and glued joints confirmed. Clamps are the unknown partPartly

Jets connect with barbed fittings and flexible hose, and the rigid runs are solvent-glued PVC. The factory store sells no hose clamps, which settles little either way since clamps are a bulk shop item. Nothing published says how the barb joints are secured.

Applies to: All models (from the factory parts catalog, which doesn't split parts by series)

Manifold-fed jetsManifold plumbing, listed as standard on all six hot tub seriesYes

Cal Spas prints manifold plumbing in its own series comparison table, which most makers never disclose. The factory catalog stocks manifolds up to ten ports, so jets get their own feed lines instead of sitting in a chain. Barbed tees are stocked too, so some runs are branched.

Applies to: Standard on all six acrylic hot tub series: Patio, Patio Plus, Escape, Escape Plus, Escape X-Series and Platinum; swim spas not assessed

Standard partsBalboa or Gecko controls and Waterway jets, but fitting your own voids…Partly

Control packs come from Balboa or Gecko depending on the series, and the wet end is Waterway, listed under Waterway's own part numbers. The factory parts store sells to the public, and outside distributors stock the same components. The warranty is void if aftermarket parts that aren't genuine Cal Spas parts cause a failure, so buy from Cal Spas while coverage lasts.

Applies to: All models

Compression-fitted jetsJet bodies bolt in with a nut and gasket, per the factory parts storeYes

Cal Spas' factory parts store sells body nuts and gaskets for every Waterway jet family it uses, at about $4 to $5. A cracked body can be unscrewed instead of cut out. One push-in grommet body is also listed, so a few tubs may differ.

Applies to: All series

Adjustable jetsAlmost every jet turns to raise or lower its pressureYes

Turn a jet face clockwise for more pressure and counter-clockwise for less, with the neck jets working in reverse. Air knobs and diverter valves control whole groups, and the ATS seat adds its own pump and panel. Cal Spas does not say which jets are fixed.

Applies to: All models; the manual says "almost all" jets adjust, so expect a few fixed ones

Service networkDealers handle service, but the warranty terms are unusually strictPartly

Warranty work runs through your dealer, who may still bill a travel fee and a diagnostic fee. Coverage ends if anyone but a designated rep works on the tub, if non-genuine parts go in, or if you sell or move the spa. Cal Spas publishes no dealer count.

Applies to: All models in the US and Canada; other countries have their own published process

American made?Built in Pomona, CaliforniaYes

Pomona, California: Current 40-acre headquarters at 1462 E. 9th Street. Pomona, California: A UK trade report describes a 1-million sq ft manufacturing facility.

Applies to: All models

What Cal Spas says, part by part8
Jets & fittings ·

Cal Spas names its jet lines (Velocity, Vector X) but publishes no jet-fitting or pipe-connection method.

Plumbing

Cal Spas says high-density 'Hydro Steel Foam' is added to support the plumbing underneath; pipe type not published.

Frame

Pressure-treated wood cabinet frame with 1-inch galvanized steel fasteners, corner gussets and vertical angle bracing, per Cal Spas.

Insulation

Thermo-Shield recyclable cabinet-wall insulation and a Thermo-Layer floor pan are standard; full foam is an option.

Shell

'Fiber Steel' shell: Cal Spas describes a patented 7-layer laminate reinforced with steel and wood; no patent number published.

Base

Thermo-Layer floor pan that Cal Spas says locks in heat and keeps moisture out; pan material not specified.

Cabinet

Elite cabinet panels made of engineered polymer with horizontal slats, per Cal Spas.

Pumps, heater & controls

Balboa or Gecko controls depending on the line, per the 2026 manuals. Cal Spas markets its Eliminator pumps and XL Heater Pro HD.

Barbed, clamped or glued? What it means3
Barbed & clamped

Hose slides over a ridged fitting and a clamp holds it. Easy to service, but clamps are one more thing that can loosen.

Glued

Pipe is solvent-welded into the fitting and becomes one piece. A strong seal, but a leak repair means cutting and re-gluing.

What to ask

Which method this model uses, whether the joints are reachable for repair, and what the plumbing warranty covers.
