Individually adjustable jets

Each person should be able to turn their own jets up or down without changing anyone else's seat.

Three jet controls: turning a jet's face changes that one jet, a diverter knob moves water from one seat to another, an air control adds bubbles
Three different controls: the jet face (one jet), the diverter (a group of seats) and the air control (bubbles).

What it is

An adjustable jet has a face you turn to make it stronger or softer, right from the seat. Turning it chokes down the water going into that one nozzle.

That's different from jets that only swivel to change their aim, and from controls that change a whole group at once, like a diverter knob that moves water between seats, or an air control that makes the stream bubblier.

Why it matters

Everyone's body is different. The jet that hits the right spot on one person lands on another person's neck, and the strength you love might be too much for your partner. Adjustable jets let each person set up their own seat without touching anyone else's.

When you turn a jet down, its water doesn't disappear. It goes to the other jets on the same pump, so the jets around it get stronger. Close too many and the tub can struggle to heat; American Whirlpool's manual lists closed jets as one cause of cold water.

Not every jet in a showroom can do this, even on expensive tubs. Caldera says its Euro jets don't regulate force, and they're 60 of the 74 jets on its flagship Cantabria. Adjustable faces are also a moving part in hot, hard water, so they can scale up and seize, and a replacement insert runs about $10 to $50.

How makers do it

Turning the face throttles one jet

The good way

The face turns a part inside the jet body that chokes or bypasses the water feeding that nozzle. Hot Spring's Hydromassage jets work this way.

One valve or pump per seat

The good way

A valve in one seat's feed sets that whole seat. Bullfrog puts one in each JetPak; Artesian's DirectFlow gives each seat a pump.

Zone controls: diverter or air knob

Acceptable

A diverter steers one pump's water between jet groups. An air knob bleeds air into a group's jets for a bubblier stream.

Pump speed or blower only

Avoid

A two-speed pump turns every jet on it up or down together. A blower adds bubbles of unheated air.

In the showroom

  1. Turn a running jet's face. If only its aim changes, that jet can't be turned down.
  2. Close one jet and feel its neighbor on the same seat. It should get stronger.
  3. Sit in your seat, tune it, and have your partner tune theirs. Both should end up comfortable.

Ask the dealer

  • Which of these jets can I actually turn down, and which only aim?
  • How many jets must stay open for the tub to heat and filter properly?
  • Which seats share this diverter, and what happens to my seat when someone turns it?

The details

Where the evidence gets complicated, how each brand does it, and the sources.

Where it gets complicated

Closing half the jets doesn't double the others' pressure. Closed jets raise pressure in the pipes, and the pump answers by moving less water, so the gain is real but smaller. And 'off' doesn't always mean off: Bullfrog's JetPak valve and Nordic's jets keep a trickle flowing by design.
