How we picked
We started with the 134 hot tubs whose makers print a continuous-duty jet pump rating. Many makers print only brake horsepower, a peak the motor can't hold that runs about 2 times the continuous figure, so it can't be compared fairly with a continuous rating. No model from American Whirlpool, Bullfrog Spas, Cal Spas, Marquis, Master Spas, Vita Spa or Wellis prints a continuous rating, so none is ranked here.
We kept the tubs whose maker passes the adjustable jets build check: each person can turn their own jets up or down. A strong pump is only useful if a sore back can turn it down. That leaves out Caldera Spas, Jacuzzi and PDC Spas. The rest are ranked within their size by total continuous pump power; on a tie, the tub with fewer jets sharing that power ranks higher. We show the top tub in each size and the top one from a second brand.
Few makers say how many jets hit the back or neck, so we can't rank on that. Where a maker does publish neck and shoulder jets, we show it.

What should I look for in a hot tub for a sore back?
- Seats at different depths, so the jets meet your back where it hurts rather than where the seat puts you.
- Jets you can turn down one seat at a time. A jet that only changes direction when you twist it can't be softened.
- Neck and shoulder jets, if your upper back is the problem. Some are above the waterline.
- A lounger, if you want jets from shoulders to feet at once. Check that it fits your height.

How do I check a tub for my back in the showroom?
- Sit in the seat you would use most, dry is fine, and see where its jets line up with your back.

What is a hydrotherapy hot tub?
It is a sales term rather than a standard: makers use it for tubs with many jets and seats shaped to aim them at the back, neck, hips and feet. Compare the continuous pump rating and the seat layout instead of the label.
Are more jets better for a sore back?
Not by themselves. Every open jet splits the same pump's flow, so more jets on the same pump means less push from each one. Pump power behind the seat you will use matters more than the count.
