Hot tub error codes, decoded from the makers' manuals

Short answer

An error code is the control telling you why it stopped heating or shut down. 39 of the 178 codes we recorded are about water flow or a dry heater, so start with the filter, the water level and the valves. Overheat codes (OH, OHH, HL on Gecko) mean stay out of the water until it cools.

What to check first for a hot tub error code: for an overheat code, stay out and take the cover off; otherwise clean the filter, top up the water, open the valves and purge any air lock, reset the breaker once, then call a technician
See a code: overheat means get out and let it cool; anything else, check the filter, the water level and the valves first.

What you can check yourself

  1. Clean the filter, or replace it if it is worn.
  2. Check the water level and top it up to the line in your manual.
  3. Open any closed valves and jets.
  4. Purge an air lock the way your owner's manual describes.
  5. Reset the GFCI or breaker once. If it trips again, leave it off.

Where the owner's part ends

Anything else: turn off power at the breaker and call a technician.

Heaters, pumps, sensors and the control board sit on mains power next to water. Never bypass a sensor, a pressure or flow switch, or a high-limit to get a tub running: they are what stop it from overheating.

Which codes mean stay out of the water?

Overheat and High limitA safety cutoff that shuts the heater off when the water or the heater gets too hot. A high-limit code means stay out until the water cools. In the glossary codes, a stuck pump and a watchdog shutdown. The manuals say not to enter the water for OHH, OHS, HL, OH, HR and the stuck-pump messages. The limits differ: Gecko flags spa water at 108°F, Balboa at 110°F, and the 2017 Jacuzzi J-300 at 112°F. Take the cover off so the water can cool. See the OH codes and what HL means.

Which control system does my hot tub have?

A hot tub control panel showing an error code, and the owner's manual, which names the control system

Most brands' manuals print one of two lists: BalboaA company that makes hot tub controls and parts sold to many brands. Its error codes are one of the two common lists. In the glossary 's or GeckoThe other big maker of hot tub controls. Its codes differ from Balboa's, even when the letters are the same.In the glossary 's. Your owner's manual names it; the label on the panel is often the spa's brand, not the control maker. The table under “The details” lists the system for each brand and model line. Some brands, like Hot Spring and Caldera, use their own lights and codes, and the list can change between model years. Open the matching list: Balboa error codes or Gecko error codes.

Which codes are not errors?

Mode and protection messages: ICE, Ecn, SLP, FrE, CLFL, COOL, COL, BLB, Pr. Pr or M019 is priming mode after power-up, Ecn and SLP are Balboa's economy and sleep modes, and ICE or COOL means the spa is running pumps to protect itself from cold. See Pr and Prr and the ICE code.

What does a hot tub error code mean?

It means a safety check failed. The control watches two things all the time: how hot the water is, and whether water is moving through the heater. The heater needs water moving past the element to carry the heat away, so every system refuses to heat when flow looks wrong. Older packs use a pressure or flow switch for this. Balboa's M7 systems put a sensor at each end of the heater and treat a big gap between them as a flow problem.

Why do the same letters mean different things?

Each control maker wrote its own list. HL on a Gecko pack means the heater's high limit tripped at 119°F, while Balboa's service manual lists HL as one panel's name for low heater flow. Pr is priming mode on Balboa-style panels and a probe fault on Gecko's in.k1000 keypad. Know your system before acting on a code.

What do numbered codes like 16, 27 or 254 mean?

On Balboa BP systems and the manuals that copy Balboa's list, the number is the message code: M016 is low flow, M027 a dry heater, M029 water too hot. Current Jacuzzi and Sundance manuals number theirs the same way, from Code 1 (freeze) to Code 254 (communication lost). Cal Spas' Balboa manual prints them as MO27 and so on. Codes we found in no maker document, such as the 616 some Jacuzzi and Sundance owners search for, are not listed here. We only print a meaning a manual gives.

Common questions

Which hot tub error codes can I fix myself?

Flow and dry-heater codes (FLO, LF, HFL, dr, FL1) often come from a dirty filter, low water, a closed valve or an air lock, and those you can check. Sensor, board and stuck-pump codes need a technician.

How do I reset a hot tub error code?

Fix the cause first. Many codes clear on their own once flow or temperature is back to normal; some Balboa messages clear with any button press. A single breaker or GFCI reset is fine. If the code returns, turn the power off and call a technician.

What does a flashing light on a hot tub mean?

It depends on the brand. On a 2026 Hot Spring a flashing blue logo light means the heater high limit tripped; on a Caldera the gray light does the same. A Bullfrog A Series badge that flashes three times quickly means a warning that needs a dealer.

Is it safe to use a hot tub that shows an error code?

Not with an overheat, high-limit, stuck-pump or watchdog code: the makers say do not enter the water. Mode messages such as Ecn, SLP, ICE and, on Balboa-style panels, Pr are normal operation.

Why does my hot tub say Ecn or SLP?

On Balboa panels Ecn is economy mode and SLP is sleep mode. In both, the pump can be off for hours outside a filter cycle, so the temperature shown may not be current. They are settings, not faults.
