Hot tub ICE code and freeze protection

Short answer

ICE means freeze protection is running: the spa sensed a freeze risk and turned its pumps, and sometimes the heater, on by itself. It is not a fault. Balboa keeps the equipment on until 4 minutes after the water is back to 45°F; the 2017 Jacuzzi J-300 cycles until the water reaches 65°F.

What to check first for a hot tub error code: for an overheat code, stay out and take the cover off; otherwise clean the filter, top up the water, open the valves and purge any air lock, reset the breaker once, then call a technician
What to check first for any code, in order, before you call a technician.

What you can check yourself

  1. Nothing to do: this is the spa working as designed.
  2. Reset the GFCI or breaker once. If it trips again, leave it off.

Where the owner's part ends

Anything else: turn off power at the breaker and call a technician.

Balboa's guide warns that if freezing conditions exist, a tripped GFCI should be reset right away or the spa can be damaged. If it will not stay on, call a technician the same day.

What makes a hot tub show ICE?

Cold water near the plumbing. Each maker sets its own threshold. Jacuzzi's 2017 J-300 starts below 55°F (12.8°C) and runs the pumps and heater in 10-minute turns until the water reaches 65°F. Balboa keeps everything on until 4 minutes after the water is back to 45°F (7.2°C). Running the pumps keeps water moving in the pipes so it cannot freeze there; Gecko's older packs do it a minute at a time, several times a day.

One message is not routine. Jacuzzi's 2020 J-400 shows a watchdog freeze warning when the water falls below 40°F (4.4°C), and says to contact your dealer.

What should I do when my hot tub says ICE?

Nothing, except keep the power on. The worst thing in a freeze is a tub with no power, because the protection cannot run.

Closing a tub for winter is a different job: see how to winterize a hot tub. For other mode messages, see Pr and priming mode.

Common questions

Is the ICE code on a hot tub a problem?

No. It means freeze protection is working. Leave the power on and the cover closed, and the message clears once the water warms.

What is the difference between ICE and COOL?

ICE is freeze protection. COOL (COL on Sundance) means the water is 20°F (11°C) below your set temperature, common after a refill with cold tap water; the pump and heater bring it back up.

What does FrE mean on a hot tub?

On older Gecko MSPA packs, FrE means the freeze protection mode is on. Like ICE, it is the spa protecting itself.

What if my hot tub's GFCI trips in freezing weather?

Reset it right away. Balboa warns that a GFCI left off in freezing conditions can let the spa be damaged, because freeze protection cannot run without power. If it trips again, call a technician.
