Jacuzzi hot tub error codes by model year

Short answer

It depends on the year. Current J-200, J-300 and J5 manuals number the codes: 16 and 17 are low heater flow, 27 and 28 a dry heater, 29 and 30 overheat, and 254 lost communication. The 2017 J-300 used short codes instead: FL--1 and FL--2 for flow, SN--1 and SN--2 for sensors, and OH at 112°F.

A hot tub control panel showing an error code, and the owner's manual, which names the control system
The panel shows the code. Its label is often the spa's brand, so check the manual for the control system.

What you can check yourself

  1. Check the water level and top it up to the line in your manual.
  2. Clean the filter, or replace it if it is worn.
  3. Purge an air lock the way your owner's manual describes.
  4. Reset the GFCI or breaker once. If it trips again, leave it off.

Where the owner's part ends

Anything else: turn off power at the breaker and call a technician.

FL--2, sensor codes and the watchdog (four pairs of dashes) need your Jacuzzi dealer. Turn off power at the breaker. Never bypass the flow switch.

Why does my Jacuzzi show a number instead of letters?

Newer models report faults as numbered message codes. The 2025 J-300 manual lists them as Code 1 (freeze) through Code 80, and the J5 manual adds Code 254 for lost communication. The numbers and names line up with Balboa's message codes: Jacuzzi's Code 16 "Heat Low Flow" and Balboa's M016 "The water flow is low" describe the same fault. Balboa's list is on the Balboa error codes page.

In between, the 2020 J-400 printed plain-language messages with a light that turns from white to solid red when a code needs clearing, and repeats the message every 2 hours until it is fixed.

How do you fix FL--1 on a Jacuzzi?

Jacuzzi's 2017 J-300 manual gives the steps. Turn the power off. Bring the water above the jets and below the lowest pillow. Clean or replace a dirty filter. Then purge the air lock: take the filter out, hold a garden hose over the filter fitting with a rag as a seal, and run water for 30 seconds. If the circulation pump still does not run, turn the breaker off and on once.

Common questions

What does FL1 mean on a Jacuzzi hot tub?

On the 2017 J-300, FL--1 (scrolling FLOW ERROR OPEN) means the flow switch is open: a very dirty filter, an air lock at the circulation pump intake, or a failed switch. The heater stops. Check the water level and filter and purge the air the way the manual describes.

What does FL2 mean on a Jacuzzi?

FL--2 (FLOW ERROR CLOSED) means the flow switch is stuck closed. The heater stops and the fix is a new switch, so contact your Jacuzzi dealer.

What is Jacuzzi code 254?

Jacuzzi's J5 manual lists Message Code 254 as system communication lost: the panel cannot talk to the control. Contact your authorized dealer.

What does ICE mean on a Jacuzzi hot tub?

Freeze protection. On the 2017 J-300 it starts when the water is below 55°F and cycles the pumps and heater until the water reaches 65°F. No action is needed.

What is Jacuzzi code 616?

None of the Jacuzzi manuals we read lists a code 616, so we cannot tell you what it means. Check the manual for your model year, or ask your dealer.
