Cleaning a hot tub filter, step by step
Short answer
Turn the tub off, lift out the cartridge, hose each pleat from top to bottom, and soak it in filter cleaner about once a month. Five of the six manuals we read say monthly; Bullfrog says every 3 to 6 weeks.

How often each maker says to clean the filter and replace the filter
6 makers
| Maker | Clean the filter | Replace the filter |

| Bullfrog X Series | Every 3 to 6 weeks | When worn after multiple cleanings |
| Caldera | Monthly | Not given as a fixed interval |
| Hot Spring | Monthly | Not given as a fixed interval |
| Jacuzzi | Monthly | When cleaning no longer restores it |
| Master Spas | At least monthly | Standard cartridge about 1 year; EcoPur insert 6 months |
| Sundance | Monthly | Pleated filter 18 months; inner insert 6 months |
How do you clean a hot tub filter, step by step?
- Turn the tub off, as Hot Spring, Bullfrog, Master Spas and Sundance all say, and never run the pumps without the filter in: debris gets drawn into the pumps.
- Clear floating debris from the filter well before you lift anything out; Hot Spring says debris can get into the internal plumbing.
- Unscrew the cartridge and lift it out.
- Hose each pleat with a spray nozzle, from the top down. Bullfrog says work the inside first, then the outside.
- Once a month, soak it in a spa filter cleaner per the label to strip oils and minerals.
- Rinse, let it dry if you have a spare, and reinstall. Jacuzzi says to dunk its cartridges first to clear trapped air.
How much to add
The product label sets the dose, by your tub's gallons.
Strengths differ between brands of the same chemical, so we don't print amounts. Test, read the label, add a little at a time with the jets running, wait, and test again. Your tub's gallons are in its manual or in our gallons and filter size table.
What should you not do when cleaning a hot tub filter?
- Don't scrub it with a brush; Bullfrog says brushing can damage the filter media.
- Don't soak inserts that aren't meant for it. Master Spas' EcoPur insert is rinse-only, never filter cleaner.
- Don't remove the filter standpipes or suction fittings; Hot Spring warns against both.
None of the six manuals mentions a dishwasher or vinegar for cartridges; they call for a hose and a spa filter cleaner. White calcium on a filter is a clue: Bullfrog reads it as a sign of high pH, to fix before it scales the heater. See hot tub pH.
Why does a clean filter matter so much?
Because everything downstream depends on flow. Hot Spring's manual says a clogged cartridge can weaken the jets, limit flow and trip the high-limit thermostat, which shuts down the whole tub. A spare set lets one dry while the other works, and Master Spas says drying may extend cartridge life. When cleaning no longer restores it, see when to replace a hot tub filter.
