Hot tub pH: what it should be and how to move it
Short answer
Keep hot tub pH between 7.2 and 7.8. CDC accepts 7.0 to 7.8, and the five makers we checked set 7.2 to 7.8 or tighter, down to 7.4 to 7.6 at Jacuzzi and Sundance.

What happens when hot tub pH is too high?
The water turns hazy, scale forms on the shell and the heater, and chlorine loses its punch. Hot Spring's manual puts the line at 7.8: above it, expect cloudy water and scale. Master Spas notes that above pH 7.5 less than half of the free chlorine is in its active form, so a high-pH tub can read enough chlorine and still be under-sanitized.
What happens when hot tub pH is too low?
How do you raise or lower hot tub pH?
Check alkalinity first. Low alkalinity lets pH bounce, and while you adjust alkalinity the pH reading swings, so Hot Spring says to ignore it until alkalinity is set. Then use a spa pH increaser (sodium carbonate) to raise it or a spa pH decreaser (sodium bisulfate) to lower it, the two types Hot Spring names.
Hot Spring's list of don'ts includes pool muriatic acid for lowering pH. Its manual has chemicals go into the filter compartment with the jets on high for at least ten minutes, cover off. Master Spas instead says to spread them across the surface with the pumps running. Use your own maker's method.
How much to add
The product label sets the dose, by your tub's gallons.
Strengths differ between brands of the same chemical, so we don't print amounts. Test, read the label, add a little at a time with the jets running, wait, and test again. Your tub's gallons are in its manual or in our gallons and filter size table.
Why does hot tub pH keep changing?
Everything you add moves it a little, including sanitizer. Master Spas' manual says the chemicals used to sanitize and clean the tub can raise or lower pH, and that low alkalinity lets it fluctuate. If pH won't stay put, retest alkalinity, then see hot tub alkalinity.
Common questions
What should the pH be in a hot tub?
Between 7.2 and 7.8, or tighter if your manual says so. CDC accepts 7.0 to 7.8; Jacuzzi and Sundance set 7.4 to 7.6, and Bullfrog and Master Spas 7.2 to 7.6.
Is it safe to use a hot tub with high pH?
CDC tells users of public hot tubs to alert the operator when pH is outside 7.0 to 7.8. At home, bring it back into your manual's range before soaking, since high pH also weakens chlorine.
Should I fix pH or alkalinity first?
Alkalinity. Bullfrog and Hot Spring both adjust total alkalinity first, because pH won't hold while alkalinity is off.
