Calcium hardness in a hot tub: too hard, too soft
Short answer
Maker targets run from 75 to 150 ppm at Hot Spring to 180 to 250 ppm at Master Spas; Bullfrog, Jacuzzi and Sundance use 150 to 250. Too much calcium scales the heater and clouds the water; too little makes it foam.

Why does calcium hardness matter in a hot tub?
Heat pushes minerals out of solution, so a hard-water tub lays them down as scale on the heater and as a white crust on the shell. Hot Spring's manual warns that water hard enough to calcify the heater can damage it, and lists cloudy water as another sign of high calcium. Go too soft and the opposite happens: Caldera says low calcium raises foaming and can harm equipment.
Hardness creeps up on its own. Only pure water evaporates; the minerals stay behind, and every top-up adds more. Keeping the cover on slows that down.
What do you do about hard water?
- Fill through a hose pre-filter; Master Spas and Caldera both call for one.
- Add a stain and scale (sequestering) product when you fill, per its label.
- If hardness reads high, Bullfrog says drain about 6 inches and top up with low-calcium water.
- Don't fill with all softened water: Master Spas caps it at 50% of the fill.
How do you remove scale from a hot tub?
With the tub empty. Master Spas says to scrub white scale with a multi-purpose spa cleaner or white vinegar and a soft cloth once drained; Hot Spring says drain, scrub, refill and rebalance, and correct alkalinity and pH so it doesn't return. Calcium on a filter is a clue too: Bullfrog reads it as a sign of high pH. Hot Spring's salt system wants it lower, 25 to 75 ppm.
How much to add
The product label sets the dose, by your tub's gallons.
Strengths differ between brands of the same chemical, so we don't print amounts. Test, read the label, add a little at a time with the jets running, wait, and test again. Your tub's gallons are in its manual or in our gallons and filter size table.
Common questions
What should calcium hardness be in a hot tub?
Your manual's range: 75 to 150 ppm at Hot Spring, 150 to 250 ppm at Bullfrog, Jacuzzi and Sundance, 180 to 250 ppm at Master Spas. CDC gives no figure.
Can I fill my hot tub with softened water?
Partly. Master Spas says never use more than 50% softened water, since very soft water raises foaming and is hard on equipment.
How do I lower calcium hardness in a hot tub?
Dilute it. Bullfrog says drain about 6 inches and refill with low-calcium water; a pre-filter on the hose helps at every fill.
