Hot tub total alkalinity, explained

Short answer

Keep total alkalinity where your manual says: 80 to 120 ppm at Bullfrog, 100 to 150 at Jacuzzi and Sundance, 80 to 150 at Master Spas, and 40 to 120 at Hot Spring. CDC sets no alkalinity figure.

Reading a test strip: dip it, then match each pad to the chart on the bottle; free chlorine 3 ppm or more, pH 7.0 to 7.8, alkalinity in the range your manual gives
Alkalinity is the shock absorber that keeps pH steady.

What does total alkalinity do in a hot tub?

It is the water's buffer. Alkalinity measures the carbonates and bicarbonates that soak up acid and base, so it decides how hard pH is to move. With low alkalinity pH jumps around with every chemical you add; with high alkalinity pH barely moves no matter what you add.

What if alkalinity is high and pH is low?

Fix alkalinity first, then pH. Bullfrog's manual says to bring alkalinity into range before adjusting pH even if it throws pH off further, then correct pH once alkalinity holds. Hot Spring makes the same call and says to disregard pH readings while alkalinity is being adjusted.

How do you raise or lower hot tub alkalinity?

Raise it with a spa alkalinity increaser, which is sodium bicarbonate; lower it with the same sodium bisulfate product that lowers pH. Hot Spring names both. Add a little, run the jets, wait the time your manual gives and retest. Once balanced, Hot Spring says alkalinity normally holds until the next refill, and suggests checking it once a month.

How much to add

The product label sets the dose, by your tub's gallons.

Strengths differ between brands of the same chemical, so we don't print amounts. Test, read the label, add a little at a time with the jets running, wait, and test again. Your tub's gallons are in its manual or in our gallons and filter size table.

Common questions

What should total alkalinity be in a hot tub?

Your manual's range, usually 80 to 120 ppm or 100 to 150 ppm. Hot Spring accepts 40 to 120 with 80 as its target. CDC gives no figure.

Can you use baking soda to raise hot tub alkalinity?

Alkalinity increaser is sodium bicarbonate, the compound sold as baking soda. Makers tell owners to use products made for spas and to dose by the label.

How often should I test alkalinity?

Hot Spring says once a month, since balanced alkalinity normally holds until the next refill. Most test strips read it every time you test anyway.
