Chlorine or bromine in a hot tub?

Short answer

Both kill germs; CDC sets 3 ppm or more for chlorine and 4 to 8 ppm for bromine. Chlorine (sodium dichlor) is accepted by every manual we read, while bromine comes with limits, such as Master Spas' rule against using it with ozone or UV.

What is the difference between chlorine and bromine?

They are cousins in the same chemical family and do the same job by different routes. Spent chlorine turns into chloramines, which smell and sanitize poorly; spent bromine turns into bromamines, which have no sharp smell and keep working. That is why bromine tubs tend to smell less like a pool. Chlorine acts at once, so you dose it as needed; bromine tablets dissolve slowly and take a few days to build a steady reading.

Which do hot tub makers allow?

Chlorine is the safe default: every manual we read accepts sodium dichlor. Bromine depends on the maker. Hot Spring accepts one-step granular bromine but bans compressed bromine and BCDMH tablets. Master Spas accepts bromine tablets but says not to use them with ozone, UV or ionizers, with its EcoPur filters, or with its Comfort Floor mats. Bullfrog gives a bromine range of 3 to 6 ppm, Sundance 2 to 4 ppm. Check what water care your tub has before choosing; see hot tub ozone vs UV.

Can you switch from bromine to chlorine?

Plan on a water change. Bullfrog's manual says owners moving from bromine to its chlorine-based system must drain and refill first, while moving from dichlor needs no drain if cyanuric acid is low enough. See how to drain and refill a hot tub.

How much to add

The product label sets the dose, by your tub's gallons.

Strengths differ between brands of the same chemical, so we don't print amounts. Test, read the label, add a little at a time with the jets running, wait, and test again. Your tub's gallons are in its manual or in our gallons and filter size table.

Common questions

Is chlorine or bromine better for a hot tub?

Neither is better everywhere. Chlorine works at once and every manual we read accepts it; bromine smells less once spent but some makers restrict it, and Master Spas says not to use it with ozone or UV.

What level of bromine should a hot tub have?

CDC says 4 to 8 ppm. Makers print 2 to 4 ppm (Sundance), 3 to 5 ppm (Master Spas) and 3 to 6 ppm (Bullfrog).

Can you mix chlorine and bromine in a hot tub?

Not as a routine. Bullfrog requires a drain and refill when moving from bromine to its chlorine-based system.
