Hot tub keeps tripping the GFCI breaker

Short answer

A GFCI trips when it senses current leaking where it shouldn't, so treat a repeat trip as a fault. Reset it once; if it trips again or won't reset, leave the power off and call a technician, as Hot Spring's manual says.

What does a hot tub GFCI do?

A ground-fault circuit interrupter cuts power the moment some current leaves the circuit by a path it shouldn't, such as through water or a person. US electrical code requires one on a hot tub; Jacuzzi's manual cites National Electrical Code Article 680. Hot Spring calls it a device for your protection and says removing it from the cord makes the spa unsafe and voids the warranty. For the wiring itself, see hot tub electrical requirements.

What should you do when a hot tub trips the GFCI?

  1. Look for the obvious: rain or water on the GFCI or plug. Hot Spring says to protect it from rain and moisture.
  2. Reset it once. Hot Spring's table says reset the GFCI, and call for service if it won't reset.
  3. If it holds, run the tub and watch. Note what was running when it tripped: the heater, a jet pump or the blower.
  4. If it trips again, leave it off. Repeated tripping is the GFCI doing its job.

Where the owner's part ends

Anything behind the equipment panel: turn off power at the breaker and call a technician.

A GFCI that trips again, trips at once on reset, or fails its monthly test means a fault somewhere in the heater, a pump, a light or the wiring. Turn off all power at the breaker, stay out of the tub, and call a technician. Never replace the GFCI with a standard breaker or bypass it.

How do you test a hot tub GFCI?

Monthly, with the tub running. Hot Spring's steps: press the test button and the spa should stop; wait 30 seconds and press reset, and power should return. If it doesn't behave that way, the manual says there may be an electrical malfunction and a risk of shock: turn off all circuits and don't use the spa until an authorized service agent has fixed it. Some Jacuzzi controls run a GFCI test from the topside panel and show a code if it fails.

Does a tripping GFCI show an error code?

Sometimes. Jacuzzi's J-300 lists a GFCI failure code. For other codes by control system, see hot tub error codes. If the whole tub is dead with no code, Jacuzzi's first checks are whether there is power to the spa and whether the household breaker has tripped.

Common questions

Why does my hot tub keep tripping the breaker?

A GFCI trips when it senses current leaking to ground, from a heater, pump, light or wiring fault or from moisture in a connection. Reset it once; if it trips again, leave the power off and call a technician.

Is it safe to keep resetting a hot tub GFCI?

No. Hot Spring's manual says to call for service if it won't reset, and to turn off all circuits and not use the spa if the GFCI fails its test.

How often should I test my hot tub GFCI?

Monthly. Press test, confirm the spa stops, wait 30 seconds and press reset, as Hot Spring's manual describes.
