Hot tub not heating? Check these first
Short answer
Most no-heat problems trace to a setting, an economy mode, a clogged filter or low water. Check those, then cut power for 30 seconds to reset; if the heater still won't run, turn the breaker off and call a technician.

Why is my hot tub not heating?
A heater only runs when water is flowing through it. A pressure or flow switch checks that, and a high-limit switch shuts everything down if the water gets too hot; both trip when flow drops. That is why Hot Spring's first answer to “does not heat, jets and lights work” is a clogged filter or an air lock, not the heater. Settings come next: Bullfrog's X Series leaves the factory in an Energy Saver mode that holds the set point 20°F lower during daytime hours, which can look like a heater fault.
What should you check when a hot tub won't heat?
- Read the display. A code names the fault: FLO means no water flow, dr means the heater may be dry; for the rest, see hot tub error codes.
- Check the set temperature and any economy, sleep or weekender mode.
- Turn the tub off, then pull and clean the filters.
- Top up the water to the level your manual shows.
- After a refill, purge the air lock as your manual describes; Jacuzzi's uses a garden hose at the filter fitting.
- Turn the power off for at least 30 seconds and back on, which Hot Spring says resets its heater high limit.
- Keep the cover on while it heats.
Where the owner's part ends
Anything behind the equipment panel: turn off power at the breaker and call a technician.
If the heater keeps tripping or nothing above helps, the fault is in the heater, a sensor or the board. Turn off power at the breaker and call a technician. Never bypass a pressure switch or high limit to get heat back.
Why won't my hot tub heat after a refill?
Usually trapped air. Filling leaves pockets in the pump and heater lines that block flow, so the flow switch keeps the heater off. Jacuzzi's manual describes priming the pump after a refill and letting air out by removing the filter cartridge. Hot Spring's troubleshooting points to air locks in the plumbing too. See weak hot tub jets for the jets side of the same problem.
How long should a hot tub take to heat?
It depends on the heater's size, the gallons and how cold the water starts. See hot tub heaters for heater sizes by brand and what they mean for heat-up time, and hot tub temperature for safe settings.
Common questions
Why is my hot tub not heating but the jets work?
Usually low flow: a clogged filter or an air lock opens the heater's pressure switch. Hot Spring's manual says clean the filters and check for air locks before calling for service.
Why won't my hot tub heat past a certain temperature?
Check for an economy mode. Bullfrog's X Series ships in Energy Saver mode, which holds the set point 20°F lower during daytime hours.
When should I call a technician for a hot tub that won't heat?
When the filters, water level, settings and a power reset don't fix it, or the heater keeps tripping. Turn off power at the breaker first.
