Why are my hot tub jets weak?

Short answer

Weak or surging jets usually mean low water, a clogged filter, closed jets or a diverter valve turned away, or an air lock after a refill. Hot Spring's and Jacuzzi's manuals list those first; a pump that won't run is a technician job.

Three jet controls: turning a jet's face changes that one jet, a diverter knob moves water from one seat to another, an air control adds bubbles

Why are my hot tub jets weak or surging?

Jets are only as strong as the water reaching the pump. Hot Spring's manual says weak or surging jets point to low water or clogged filters: a low level lets the skimmer draw air, and a clogged cartridge chokes the flow to the pump. Jacuzzi's list for poor jet action adds jets turned off, air controls off and the pump not running.

Why are the jets weak on one side?

A diverter valve. Many tubs share one pump between groups of seats, and a valve on the top edge sends the water to one group or another. Turn it back toward the middle, or toward the seat you want. Hot Spring's version is the comfort control lever, which has to be open.

Why don't the jets work after a refill?

Air trapped in the pump. Jacuzzi's manual says to press the jets button several times, never running the motor more than 5 to 10 seconds at a time, then turn power off and let air out by removing the filter cartridge before trying again. Its flow troubleshooting also purges an air lock with a garden hose held over the filter fitting. Follow your own manual's method.

Where the owner's part ends

Anything behind the equipment panel: turn off power at the breaker and call a technician.

If the pump doesn't run at all, runs but moves no water after priming, or trips the breaker, the problem is in the equipment bay. Turn off power at the breaker and call a technician.

What if the display shows a flow error?

Flow codes usually come back to the same list: filter, water level, closed valves, air. Clear those first, then see hot tub error codes for your control system. A tub without enough flow won't heat either; see hot tub not heating.

Common questions

Why are my hot tub jets suddenly weak?

Low water or a clogged filter, per Hot Spring's manual. Top up, clean the filter, and check that jets and diverter valves are open.

Why are hot tub jets not working after refilling?

Usually an air lock. Jacuzzi's manual says to pulse the jets button in short bursts and let air out at the filter; follow your own manual's steps.

Why do only some of my hot tub jets work?

A diverter valve or comfort lever is sending the water to other seats, or some jet faces are turned off. Open them before suspecting the pump.
