Hot tub electrical requirements

Short answer

Most hot tubs need their own 240V, 50A circuitWhat most hot tubs need: their own 240-volt circuit on a 50-amp breaker, wired by a licensed electrician. Some need 40 or 60 amps.In the glossary on a 50-amp BreakerThe switch in your electrical panel that protects a circuit. The tub's spec sheet sets its size in amps; most need 50.In the glossary , with GFCIA safety switch that cuts the power in a fraction of a second if current leaks to ground, for example through water and a person. Hot tubs must have one.In the glossary protection: 163 of the 272 models that publish a breaker size list 50 A as the most they need. Plug-and-play (120V)A tub that runs on a dedicated household outlet instead of a 240-volt line. It has one jet pump and a small heater, so it heats slowly and can't run the heater and the jets at full at the same time.In the glossary tubs run on 120 V instead. A licensed electrician sizes the circuit.

A 120V hot tub plugged into its own 15 or 20 amp outlet compared with a 240V tub wired from its own 50 amp breaker through a disconnect
A plug-in tub on its own GFCI-protected outlet, and a 240V tub wired to its own breaker through a disconnect.

Do hot tubs need 220 or 240 volts?

Most do: 304 of the 390 models whose listing names a voltage need 240 V, and 86 can run on 120 V (74 sold as plug-and-play, 12 wired for either supply). The reason is the HeaterAn electric element in the water line, usually 4 to 5.5 kW on 240V and 1 to 1.5 kW on 120V. More kilowatts heat the water faster. In the glossary . Most are rated 4 kW (143 models) or 5.5 kW (124), and an ordinary 15-amp, 120-volt circuit carries at most 1,800 watts (120 volts times 15 amps), less than half of a 4 kW heater, before a pump starts.

A 120 V tub works inside that limit, so it heats more slowly. That trade is the subject of plug-and-play hot tubs.

What size breaker does a hot tub need?

50 amps for most: 163 of 272 models (60%). 37 list 40 A at most, 50 need 60 A and 15 are 120 V tubs on a 15- or 20-amp circuit. The model's spec sheet sets the breaker, and the circuit feeds only the tub.

Does a hot tub need a GFCI breaker?

Yes. The electrical code requires ground-fault protection on the circuit that feeds a hot tub, unless the tub has its own built in. A GFCI cuts the power within a fraction of a second when current leaks to ground, for example through water and a person. Some tubs ship with a GFCI subpanel or cord; the manual says what yours includes.

Where do the disconnect and outlets go?

Electrical clearances around a hot tub: a disconnect at least 5 ft away and in sight, no outlets within 6 ft, an outlet 6 to 20 ft away, power lines 22.5 ft from the water

The code sets distances so nobody can reach a switch or an outlet from the water:

  • A DisconnectA shutoff box near the tub, within sight of it but at least 5 feet away, so the power can be cut by someone who isn't in the water. In the glossary switch within sight of the tub, at least 5 ft from the water's edge.
  • No outlet within 6 ft of an outdoor tub, and one outlet between 6 and 20 ft away.
  • GFCI on every outlet within 20 ft.
  • 22.5 ft between overhead power lines and the water.

Local codes vary; the permit and the inspection settle what applies to your yard.

What to ask before the electrician comes

  • Which breaker size does this model's spec sheet call for?
  • Does it come with a GFCI subpanel or cord, or does my electrician supply one?
  • Can it start on 120 V and switch to 240 V later?
  • How far is my panel from the spot, and will the run need heavier wire?

Breaker is the largest size the maker lists for any configuration; smaller options are listed under it. Supply is the voltage the listing names. Heater is the maker's 240 V rating, with a dash for tubs that run on 120 V only. The dot links to the spec sheet or manual. 2 listings that name no standard breaker size are left out.

What wire size does a hot tub need?

It depends on the breaker, the type of wire and the length of the run, so the maker's guide and your electrician decide it. Jacuzzi's guide asks for copper of at least 6 AWGAmerican Wire Gauge, the wire size. A smaller number is a thicker wire: 6 AWG is thicker than 8. The electrician sizes it for the breaker and the run.In the glossary on a 50 A circuit, with longer runs needing heavier wire, and recommends against aluminum.

The wire type matters because the same copper carries different currents depending on its insulation and the terminals it lands on. In Cerrowire's ampacity chart, 8 AWG copper is rated 40 A as household NM-B cable but 50 A as THWN wire at 75°C; 6 AWG is rated 55 A and 65 A. That is why two installation guides can name different gauges for the same breaker.

The code rules, section by section

As the Municipality of Anchorage's building handout summarizes Article 680 of the National Electrical Code:

  • The disconnect must be within sight of the tub and at least 5 ft from its inside wall (680.13).
  • No receptacle within 6 ft of the inside wall of an outdoor tub, and GFCI on every receptacle within 20 ft (680.22).
  • At least one 15- or 20-amp receptacle between 6 and 20 ft away (680.22).
  • A plug-in tub may use a cord of up to 15 ft, protected by a GFCI (680.42).
  • 22.5 ft between overhead power lines and the water (680.9).
  • GFCI protection on the outlet that supplies the tub, unless the tub is listed with its own (680.44).

The separate emergency shutoff switch in 680.41 does not apply at a one-family home, per EC&M's summary of the 2020 code. Local codes amend the NEC and adopt different editions; the permit and the inspection settle what applies to your yard.

Which tubs ship with their own GFCI?

38 listings we track mention a GFCI subpanel shipped with the tub, and 19 a GFCI cord. Read the electrical page of the model's manual to see what yours includes and what the electrician supplies.

Common questions

Do hot tubs need 220 or 240 volts?

Most do. Of the 390 models whose listing names a supply voltage, 304 list 240 V only. 86 can run on 120 V: 74 are sold as plug-and-play, and 12 more can be wired for either 120 or 240 V.

The plug-and-play models are listed on plug-and-play hot tubs.

What size breaker does a hot tub need?

Usually 50 A. 163 of 272 models list 50 A as the largest breaker they need, 37 list 40 A and 50 list 60 A. 107 list more than one size for different configurations. The spec sheet for your model sets it, and a licensed electrician sizes the circuit.

Does a hot tub need a GFCI?

Yes. NEC 680.44 requires GFCI protection on the outlet that supplies a spa or hot tub, unless the unit is listed as having its own built-in GFCI protection. Some tubs ship with a GFCI subpanel or a GFCI cord for this.

How far does the disconnect have to be from a hot tub?

At least 5 ft from the inside wall of the tub and within sight of it, under NEC 680.13 as Anchorage's building department summarizes it. The point is that nobody can reach the switch from the water.

How close can an outlet be to a hot tub?

No receptacle within 6 ft of the inside wall of an outdoor tub, and GFCI protection on every receptacle within 20 ft, under NEC 680.22 as Anchorage summarizes it. At least one 15- or 20-amp receptacle must sit between 6 and 20 ft away.

Can a hot tub be under power lines?

Not close under them. NEC 680.9, as Anchorage summarizes it, asks for 22.5 ft in any direction between overhead conductors and the water's edge.
