Sundance Spas’ complaint records

Sundance Spas as a company

  • 1.1 of 5 on ConsumerAffairs from 66 reviews.
  • The Better Business Bureau lists 5 complaints in three years and rates the company D-.

How it’s built. The 8 build checks, in plain words.

The same eight checks we run on every brand, answered from Sundance Spas’ own documents. Tap one for what it means and the evidence.

Self-supporting shellDoes the shell hold itself up?No
Shell layers: an acrylic skin backed by fiberglass, self-supporting compared with propped on posts

A base pan and a separate frame hold it up.

Sundance's own patent shows the acrylic shell resting on an ABS base pan and a frame of vertical supports and a top rail. Sprayed foam beds the shell into place and insulates it. Take away the pan and frame and the shell has nothing to stand on.

Applies to: All models (680, 780, 880 and 980 Series). Older tubs have a wood support structure; the current patented platform uses molded ABS supports

Clamped plumbingAre the hoses glued and clamped?Partly
How a hose joint goes together: glue on the ridged barb, the hose pushed on, then a stainless clamp tightened; beside it, a clamped joint (good) and a glue-only joint years later, weeping

Some joints are clamped barbs, others are glued slip fittings.

The parts catalog lists barbed manifolds and jet bodies along with Sundance-numbered hose clamps, but also slip ports that are glued solid. Which one you get depends on the circuit. Either way the lines sit in sprayed foam, so reaching a leak means digging foam out first.

Applies to: All models (from the shared Sundance and Jacuzzi parts catalog, not a teardown). The mix of barb and slip fittings seems to vary by model and circuit

Manifold-fed jetsDoes each jet get its own line?Yes
Manifold plumbing feeds each jet its own hose; daisy-chained jets share one line

Manifold-fed. One trunk line splits out to each jet.

Sundance sells its own 2, 4, 6 and 7-port water manifolds plus air manifolds and blank plugs. Jet bodies have one water port and no pass-through to the next jet, so a blocked jet does not starve the rest. This comes from the parts catalog, not an opened cabinet.

Applies to: All models (from the shared Sundance and Jacuzzi service parts catalog; not checked against a teardown or a factory plumbing diagram)

Standard partsCan any repair tech buy the parts?Partly
A pump labelled with the supplier's own name and number is sold in many places; one with only a house number is sold in one place

Pumps and filters are standard parts; jets and boards are not.

Pumps trace back to Aqua-Flo, Balboa and Emerson, flow switches are Harwil, and filters cross-reference to Unicel and Pleatco. Independent suppliers sell all of it online without a dealer account. Fluidix jets, control boards, topside panels and ClearRay UV only come from Sundance.

Applies to: All models; the mix of standard and proprietary parts is the same across series

Compression-fitted jetsAre the jet bodies held by a nut, not glue?Partly
Three ways a jet body is held in the shell: threaded with a gasket and back nut that unscrews (good), pushed into a rubber grommet (OK), or glued in and cut out to replace (avoid)

Many jet bodies bolt in with a nut; the main Fluidix body isn't documented.

Parts sellers list body nuts, washers and O-rings for most Sundance jet families. The Fluidix ST body used on many current tubs isn't documented, and newer shared Jacuzzi parts use push-in grommets. Nothing shows glued bodies.

Applies to: All series

Adjustable jetsCan you turn each jet up or down?Yes
Three jet controls: turning a jet's face changes that one jet, a diverter knob moves water from one seat to another, an air control adds bubbles

Turn the outer dial on each jet.

The owner's manuals tell you to turn a jet's outer ring to raise, lower or shut off its flow, and to rotate the center disk to change the stream. At least six have to stay open per system so the pump and filter work properly. Air is set per group, not per jet.

Applies to: 680, 780, 880 and 980 Series, from the 2025 owner's manuals. Not every jet adjusts; the manuals say "certain jets"

Service networkCan someone near you fix it?Yes
A dealer's technician close by drives a parts-stocked van to the house quickly; a home far from any dealer waits longer, and in winter a long wait can freeze the plumbing

359 authorized dealers, and they do the warranty repairs.

Sundance lists 359 dealer locations in the US, and the 2022 temperature-sensor recall was repaired free through those dealers. Independent suppliers also stock Sundance-numbered parts online. The published warranty covers components but never says who must do the work or whether labor is paid.

Applies to: All models, US market

American made?Built in Mexico.Partly
Yes: built in a US plant the maker names. Partly: a US plant and one abroad, with no word on which built yours. No: built abroad, with molded parts shipped from there

Built in Mexico.

Mexico: 680 to 980 Series spas built July 2021 to December 2022 were made in Mexico, per a 2023 federal recall.

Applies to: The recall covers 680, 780, 880 and 980 Series tubs sold July 2021 to December 2022; the company address applies to all models

What stands out

  • UV-C plus ozone standard. Even the entry models ship with the factory ClearRay Active Oxygen system (UV-C plus ozone).
  • Plug-in 120V models. Alicia and Prado are 120V/240V convertible and come with a 10 ft GFCI cord for plug-in use.

Worth knowing

  • No circulation pump. None of the five 680 models has a circulation pump.
2 more about the 680 Series
  • Much shorter warranty. The 680 warranty gives 5 years shell structure, 3 years shell surface and 3 years equipment, with only 1 year on the cabinet, jets and frame. The 780, 880 and 980 get 10/7/5.
  • Near-twins of the Jacuzzi J-200. Alicia, Prado and McKinley publish the same footprints, jet counts and seat counts as the Jacuzzi J-215, J-225 and J-285, at similar list prices. The same company (Sundance Spas, Inc.) makes both brands, so compare dealer prices across the two.
