Is the tub American made?

The name on the cabinet isn't always the company that built the tub, or the country. Check where the factory is, because molded parts ship from there.

Yes: built in a US plant the maker names. Partly: a US plant and one abroad, with no word on which built yours. No: built abroad, with molded parts shipped from there

What it is

Some brands mold their shells and build their tubs in their own factory. Some share a factory with sister brands under one parent company. Some are built overseas, by the brand itself or by a contract factory that builds for several names.

The address on the brochure isn't always the whole story, either. Hot Spring's manuals say Vista, California, but its parent company, Watkins, also builds in Tijuana and doesn't say which models come from where.

Why it matters

Most parts that fail on a hot tub are generic. Pumps, heaters and control packs come from a handful of suppliers, and you can buy them anywhere. The molded parts are different. A replacement shell, a cabinet panel or a brand-only jet only exists while the factory that owns the mold keeps making it, and it ships from there.

So the factory decides how long you wait for a part, and whether anyone can make one at all. Wellis builds in Hungary, and its factory parts shop quotes 10 to 12 working days by DHL. After year seven, a Bullfrog frame claim means shipping the tub to Bullfrog at your cost. If the maker closes, there may be no part at all.

A great tub can come from anywhere, so this check isn't about the build itself. It's about where parts come from, and how fast, when something breaks.

How makers do it

Built in a US plant the maker names

The good way

One company forms the shells and builds the tubs in its own US plant: Master Spas in Fort Wayne, Indiana; PDC in Williamsport, Pennsylvania; Bullfrog in Herriman, Utah.

US plant plus plants abroad, or a US address that isn't stated as the plant

Acceptable

Watkins builds Hot Spring and Caldera in Vista, California and in Tijuana, Mexico, and doesn't say which models come from where. A 2023 federal recall says Sundance and Jacuzzi tubs built from July 2021 to December 2022 were made in Mexico.

Built outside the US

Avoid

The maker's plants are abroad. Wellis builds in Hungary, and its factory parts shop quotes DHL delivery in 10 to 12 working days.

In the showroom

  1. Read the warranty card for the maker's name and address. That company, not the badge, backs the tub.
  2. Read the brochure's origin claim. A bare 'Made in USA' means virtually all-domestic parts; few tubs qualify.

Ask the dealer

  • Which factory built the tub you'd deliver to me, and has production moved lately?
  • If the shell cracks in year six, where does the new one ship from?
  • What's the last shell or cabinet part you ordered for this brand, and how long did it take?

The details

Where the evidence gets complicated, how each brand does it, and the sources.

Where it gets complicated

Where a tub is made predicts freight time and recourse, not build quality. A US plant won't stop a maker folding: Living Water built in Tampa and closed in 2009. Customs law cuts against intuition too: tubs formed in China from US acrylic sheet count as Chinese.
