Dimension One Spas

A Southern California original that sells customization: patented UV-and-ozone water care, jetted pillows that slide to your height, loungers that keep you seated and programmed massage sequences.

The long read: how the tubs are built, the complaint record, the warranty part by part, and the company’s history.

How it started

Bob Hallam started it as a retail store. It grew into a maker of hot tubs and aquatic fitness systems.

What Dimension One Spas is known for, and the catch

How it’s built

1 of 8 pass

Eight things that decide whether it lasts. Tap any for the detail.

Self-supporting shellA wood frame carries the shell, per D1's own warrantyNo

D1 warrants a factory-installed wood frame as a component, and its own patent describes rails and box sections taking the shell's vertical load. The full-cabinet foam is credited with reinforcing the structure as well. The lifetime UltraLife shell warranty covers cracks and leaks, not standing up without a frame.

Applies to: All models; confirmed separately for the premium Bay and Reflections collections and the value @Home collection, 2025 model year

Clamped plumbingDimension One Spas doesn't publish this. Ask the dealerNot published

Jet bodies use a glued socket on the water side and a barb for air. What happens along the runs between pump, manifold and jet is documented nowhere. Warranties cover plumbing leaks for three to five years but never say how the joints are made.

Applies to: All models; only the jet-body fittings are documented, and no series shows the hoses themselves

Manifold-fed jetsDimension One Spas doesn't publish this. Ask the dealerNot published

The manuals describe diverter valves that send water between jet banks, which is zoning rather than the pipe layout behind the shell. No parts diagram, cutaway or service video shows how each jet is fed. Suppliers list no D1 manifold, which settles nothing either way.

Applies to: All models; no series could be confirmed either way

Standard partsCommon Balboa and Waterway parts, but the warranty requires D1 partsPartly

Pumps, controls, jets and filters come from Balboa, Gecko, Waterway, Sta-Rite, Laing and Pleatco, and at least six independent suppliers stock them. Every 2025 warranty voids coverage for damage blamed on non-D1 parts. Finding parts is easy; fitting them before the warranty ends is the risk.

Applies to: All models. Parts sourcing is confirmed by several independent suppliers; the warranty clause is in every 2025 warranty, domestic and export

Compression-fitted jetsLikely nut-held standard bodies, but Dimension One doesn't sayPartly

D1 builds on Waterway's Storm jet families, which come in a nut-and-gasket version and a push-in grommet version. A parts seller lists the threaded body for D1 tubs, but nothing from D1 confirms it. Nothing shows glued bodies.

Applies to: All series

Adjustable jetsEach rotating jet face opens, throttles or shuts offYes

Turn the jet face counterclockwise to open it and clockwise to close it, all the way to off. Directional jets only aim the stream, so fewer jets throttle than the headline count suggests. D1 tells owners to keep at least six adjustable jets open at all times.

Applies to: All models, for the rotating jets (most of the jets on the models checked). Directional jets aim but don't throttle

Service networkYour selling dealer handles service, with the factory as backupPartly

Warranty work routes through an authorized D1 dealer or the factory in Chino, California. Outside repairs need pre-authorization, and a non-D1 part fitted by an independent can cost you coverage. Parts are widely sold, so out-of-warranty work stays open. D1 doesn't publish dealer coverage by region.

Applies to: All models, North America and export markets

American made?American company in California, but no factory address is statedPartly

Warranties and patents point to New Dimension One Spas in Chino, California, and the brand has built spas in San Diego County since the late 1970s. Nothing on the site or in the manuals names a plant. Chino may be corporate and service rather than production.

Applies to: All models, 2025 model year. Only the corporate address is published; no factory is named for any series

What Dimension One Spas says, part by part8
Jets & fittings ·

D1 publishes jet names and 'Hydronomics' balance claims, but no jet-body connection method or pipe type.

Plumbing

D1 markets 'Hydronomics' pump, plumbing and jet balance plus a 24-hour circulation pump. Pipe material and fitting method not published.

Frame

Wood frame, warranted for two years under the 2025 Bay and Reflections warranty.

Insulation

Full foam: D1 says a high-density foam layer covers the base and a second high-density layer coats the walls.

Shell

UltraLife textured shell or color acrylic, reinforced with robotically applied 'elastocast' in place of fiberglass, according to D1.

Base

D1 describes a 'reinforced base' that absorbs pump pressure and secures piping. Base material is not published.

Cabinet

Envirotect recycled-content synthetic cabinet standard; Terracina resin cabinet with wood-look UV-resistant film optional on some collections.

Pumps, heater & controls

D1 SmartHUB touch control with optional SmartTub app. D1 doesn't name its control hardware supplier.

Barbed, clamped or glued? What it means3
Barbed & clamped

Hose slides over a ridged fitting and a clamp holds it. Easy to service, but clamps are one more thing that can loosen.

Glued

Pipe is solvent-welded into the fitting and becomes one piece. A strong seal, but a leak repair means cutting and re-gluing.

What to ask

Which method this model uses, whether the joints are reachable for repair, and what the plumbing warranty covers.

What owners complain about4
Flow and circulation faults

Owners report flow-sensor and circulation-pump failures causing no-heat errors, including one repair costing about $1,300 at roughly 3.5 years.

Topside panels failing repeatedly

Two separate owners report topside control panels failing again and again, replaced about five times in six years.

Leaking heater fittings

A 2023 reviewer described leaking heater fittings as a design flaw; other owners report early pump failures.

Dealer-dependent warranty service

Complaints describe a dealer refusing warranty work, multi-week service waits, and hour-long phone holds reaching the company.

What owners praise3
Respected build quality

Forum dealers and owners, mostly writing before 2013, ranked D1 fit-and-finish and equipment bays alongside top-tier brands.

Long-lived older units

Several owners describe older D1 tubs running seven to fifteen-plus years with modest repairs.

Strong jets

Owners of Diplomat, Chairman and Aurora models praised the neck, shoulder and lounger jets for daily use.
