Manifold plumbing vs daisy-chained jets
A manifold feeds every jet its own hose. A daisy chain runs jet to jet, so the jets at the end get the least.

What it is
Every jet needs water from a pump, and there are two basic ways to get it there.
With a manifold, the pump feeds a thick pipe with a row of outlets, and each jet gets its own hose straight from it. With a daisy chain, one hose runs from jet to jet to jet. Water comes into the first jet, some of it sprays out, and the rest carries on to the next one. Think of a row of sprinklers on one garden hose: the ones at the end always spray the weakest.
Why it matters
Water takes the easy path. In a chain, each jet takes its share and passes on what's left, so the seat farthest from the pump gets the least pressure. That weak seat shows up on day one, and nothing fixes it short of re-plumbing the tub. Close one jet and the ones after it jump, because they were being starved. A manifold feeds every jet from the same pressure, so the far seat feels like the near one.
It matters again when something goes wrong. With a manifold, each jet has its own line, so a tech can trace a leak to one hose. In a chain, one clog weakens every jet after it, and a leak buried in foam means hunting along the whole run.
Designs do change. Bullfrog's 2001 patent chained its JetPaks in series; since 2013, each pack plugs into its own port on one main line.
How makers do it
Manifold with one hose per jet
The good wayA fat pipe with a row of ports feeds each jet its own hose. Cal Spas lists it as standard on every hot tub series.
A pump for each seat
The good wayEach massage seat gets its own pump and manifold, so no seat steals from another. Artesian's Elite tubs run four or five jet pumps.
Seats sharing a pump by diverter
AcceptableA valve swings one pump between jet groups. Caldera's manual says its tub isn't built to give every jet full power with the diverters centered.
Long daisy chain on one hose
AvoidOne hose runs jet to jet. Each jet bleeds off flow, so the far ones starve, and one clog weakens everything after it.
In the showroom
- Run the jets and palm each one along a row. A steady fade suggests they're chained.
- Cover one jet with your hand. If its neighbors jump hard, they share its line.
- Sit in your favorite seat with the diverter set the way you'd use it. That's your real pressure.
Ask the dealer
- Does each jet here get its own hose from a manifold, or are they chained?
- Which pump runs this seat, and how many other jets share it?
- Can I see the pump diagram for this model in the owner's manual?
The details
Where the evidence gets complicated, how each brand does it, and the sources.
Where it gets complicated
Pipe size matters as much as layout: a big trunk with short branches can feed jets evenly, while long thin hoses off a manifold can lag. And a soft jet isn't proof of a chain; a 1/4-inch nozzle flows about 7 gallons a minute, a 7/16-inch one about 22.
