PDC Spas

A small Pennsylvania fiberglass shop, in business since 1957, that hand-lays self-supporting shells and backs them with a 35-year structure warranty.

The long read: how the tubs are built, the complaint record, the warranty part by part, and the company’s history.

How it started

David Livingston started Plastic Development Company as a fiberglass job shop making in-ground pool sidewalls and jeep bodies. David Livingston II moved it into hot tubs in 1982.

What PDC Spas is known for, and the catch

How it’s built

2 of 8 pass

Eight things that decide whether it lasts. Tap any for the detail.

Self-supporting shellThe fiberglass shell stands without foam or a frameYes

PDC builds the shell from multiple hand-rolled fiberglass layers and says it needs no foam or cabinet walls to hold its shape. The warranty backs that up, covering the fiberglass structure itself for 35 years on Luxury and 25 on Premium. The cheaper Lifestyle line gets 10 years.

Applies to: Claimed for all models; best supported on the Luxury Series (35-year structural warranty) and Premium Series (25-year). The Lifestyle Series has a 10-year warranty and a wood frame, so its shell may rely more on the frame

Clamped plumbingGlued plastic pipe. Whether barbs are clamped is not statedPartly

The owner's manual says the jets, pipes and fittings are glued together, and warns those joints take stress from heat cycles, pump pressure and shipping. Nothing in the manuals mentions barbs or hose clamps. Ask a dealer to pull a cabinet panel on a floor model.

Applies to: All hot tub series. Swim spas are probably the same (the 2019 swim spa manual matches) but weren't checked separately

Manifold-fed jetsPDC Spas doesn't publish this. Ask the dealerNot published

PDC prints no plumbing diagram or parts drawing, and the word manifold appears nowhere in its manuals. The manuals show jets grouped into banks by diverters and air controls, which says nothing about how each bank is fed. A dealer can open an equipment bay.

Applies to: All models; nothing found for any series either way

Standard partsBalboa controls and stock filters. Jets come only from PDCPartly

Every 2026 model runs a Balboa pack, and the 25 sq ft filter is an ordinary aftermarket cartridge for about $23. Jets, housings and shell hardware carry PDC's own names with no published part numbers. A tech orders those from the Williamsport factory or nowhere.

Applies to: All models; control systems were checked model by model in the 2026 hot tub spec tables and the 2019 swim spa manual

Compression-fitted jetsMost jet bodies come with a nut and gasket, per a PDC dealer's storePartly

A long-time PDC dealer's parts store sells PDC's CMP jet bodies with a gasket, nut and compression ring. Its Waterway Euro body listing doesn't say, and PDC publishes nothing on it. Nothing shows glued bodies.

Applies to: All series

Adjustable jetsZones adjust, not single jets. Aim is per jetPartly

Diverter valves on the lip shift pump power between groups of jets, and each air control sets the air mix for a segment. The 143-jet Bali has two diverters and six air controls. Eyeball nozzles aim by hand, but no per-jet throttle is documented.

Applies to: All hot tub series; jet, diverter and air-control counts are from the 2026 spec tables

Service networkNo authorized service network. Any shop you pick can order partsPartly

PDC states in writing that it has no authorized service representatives. You choose the repair company and PDC sells the parts to them, which cuts out dealer gatekeeping but leaves you managing the claim. Labor is paid for three years only, then it is on you.

Applies to: All models in the 48 contiguous states; warranties differ elsewhere, and Canada has its own retailer page

American made?Built in Williamsport, PennsylvaniaYes

Williamsport, Pennsylvania: 3743 West Fourth Street plant; products made start to finish on site.

Applies to: All hot tubs and swim spas, formed, laminated, plumbed and assembled in Williamsport; electronics (Balboa, Waterway), pumps and acrylic sheet are bought in

What PDC Spas says, part by part8
Jets & fittings ·

PDC names Reflections stainless-steel jets but publishes no jet-fitting or pipe-connection method.

Plumbing

Pipe type not published; PDC says a lift-up thermal blanket, not foam, surrounds the plumbing for service access.

Frame

The LifeStyle owner's manual places the serial plate on a wood frame; PDC publishes no frame material for other series.

Insulation

TemperLok: reflective thermal blanket trapping dead air and recycling pump heat; PDC argues against full-foam insulation.

Shell

Lucite cast acrylic backed by multiple layers of hand-rolled fiberglass and non-filled resins; PDC says shells stand unsupported.

Base

TemperBase three-layer floor: ABS plastic base, foam insulation and wooden structural layer, plus a reflective thermal barrier.

Cabinet

Perma-Wood polymer wood-alternative skirting, described by PDC as virtually maintenance-free.

Pumps, heater & controls

Balboa control packs on 2026 models; earlier model years used Gecko. Ozone is standard on all hot tubs.

Barbed, clamped or glued? What it means3
Barbed & clamped

Hose slides over a ridged fitting and a clamp holds it. Easy to service, but clamps are one more thing that can loosen.

Glued

Pipe is solvent-welded into the fitting and becomes one piece. A strong seal, but a leak repair means cutting and re-gluing.

What to ask

Which method this model uses, whether the joints are reachable for repair, and what the plumbing warranty covers.

What owners complain about3
Warranty gaps and claim friction

Owners describe failures landing just outside coverage or in excluded categories, then being billed for repairs.

Plumbing leaks and cracked valves

A 2026 review reports three cracked flow valves, one blowing off and draining the tub, just past the plumbing warranty.

Slow parts and accessory replacement

Two recent owners describe long waits, including swim-spa steps still unavailable months after delivery.

What owners praise2
Professional delivery and owner training

Reviewers say install crews arrive as promised, remove old spas and stay until owners can run the tub.

Factory staff resolve escalated issues

Several Google reviewers credit PDC staff with resolving problems after escalation.
