What to put a hot tub on

Short answer

A full 6-person hot tub puts a median 81 lb/sq ft on its base, about twice what an ordinary deck is built to carry. Makers recommend a reinforced Concrete padA flat slab of reinforced concrete, at least 4 inches thick. It is the base makers' instructions recommend. In the glossary at least 4 in thick; a deck works only if it is built for the load.

What to put a hot tub on: a concrete pad, yes; a deck only if rated for the load; pavers or gravel depending on the maker; grass or dirt, no

  • Concrete pad

    Yes

Yes, and it is the base makers recommend: a reinforced slab at least 4 in thick, flat and level.

    What 3 makers say
    • Hot Spring: a reinforced pad at least 4 in thick, with a slope of 1/2 in per 10 ft preferred for runoff; concrete is best long term
    • Bullfrog: at least 4 in, reinforced with rebar or mesh, no more than 1/2 in of slope over 8 ft, no shims
    • PDC: at least 4 in with edge footers below the frost line; the standard slab is 8 x 8 ft
  • Deck

    Only if rated for it

Only if the deck is built for the load. Makers ask for 100 to 150 lb per sq ft; the IRC designs an ordinary deck for 40. Have a builder or engineer check the deck.

    What 4 makers say
    • Marquis: a reinforced pad or a wood deck able to carry 100 lb per sq ft
    • PDC: a level slab or a wood deck rated for at least 100 lb per sq ft
    • Hot Spring: a deck rated for the load in its spec chart, 110 to 130 lb per sq ft for the Limelight models; ask a contractor or structural engineer
    • Cal Spas: have a structural engineer or contractor confirm a raised deck carries 150 lb per sq ft
  • Pavers or bricks

    Depends on the maker

Some makers accept them under the whole tub on a level base, and warn they can settle. Others don't.

    What 4 makers say
    • Bullfrog: concrete pavers or bricks are an accepted base
    • Hot Spring: bricks must sit level under the entire spa, and can still settle unevenly
    • PDC: pavers or stone tend to shift over time
    • Cal Spas: pavers and brick are not adequate
  • Gravel

    Depends on the maker

Some makers accept gravel or crushed rock; Cal Spas does not. Read the manual for your model before you build a gravel base.

    What 3 makers say
    • Bullfrog: pea gravel or crushed rock of 1.5 in or more is accepted; its dealers also sell pre-formed spa pads
    • Dimension One: gravel and firm ground are suitable only if they can carry the load
    • Cal Spas: gravel and sand are not adequate
  • Grass, dirt or sand

    No

No. Soft ground settles under the weight, and a base that settles puts stress on the shell.

    What 2 makers say
    • PDC: never directly on sand or grass
    • Cal Spas: dirt and sand are not adequate
  • Garage or indoors

    Only if rated for it

Possible, if the floor carries the load and the room handles water and humidity. No maker we read covers garages by name; their indoor rules apply.

    What 3 makers say
    • PDC: the floor must take a constant 100 lb per sq ft; a floor drain and a dehumidifier are recommended
    • Hot Spring: flooring that grips when wet, drainage, and a floor drain in a new room
    • Cal Spas: flooring that treated water won't stain or damage

Can you put a hot tub on a deck?

Only if the deck is built for it. The building code designs an ordinary deck for a Live loadHow much weight a deck or floor is built to carry per square foot. The building code designs an ordinary deck for 40; a full hot tub puts down about twice that.In the glossary of 40 lb per sq ft. A full hot tub puts down about twice as much for the median model, all the time, on one spot. Makers put their number in writing: Marquis and PDC ask for a deck rated for 100 lb per sq ft, Hot Spring for 110 to 130, and Cal Spas for 150. Have a builder or engineer check the deck before the tub arrives.

Do you need a concrete pad for a hot tub?

Not always, but it is what makers recommend, and the one base none of the six makers we read rejects. Hot Spring, Bullfrog and PDC all ask for at least 4 in of reinforced concrete. The base also decides the warranty: Hot Spring and Cal Spas exclude damage from an inadequate foundation. What a pad costs is on hot tub installation cost.

How much weight per square foot, by size

289 models

A median 78 lb/sq ft across 289 models, full of water. The median six-seater spreads 4,340 lb over about 49 sq ft, which is 81 lb/sq ft. Every one of the 289 is over the 40 lb deck figure. Those figures are the maker's full weight spread evenly over the footprint; weights for every model are on how much a hot tub weighs.

Can you put a hot tub on pavers or gravel?

Some makers say yes, others no, so the manual for your model decides. Bullfrog accepts pavers, bricks, pea gravel and crushed rock; Cal Spas rejects all of them. In between, Hot Spring accepts bricks laid level under the whole tub but warns they can settle unevenly, and PDC says pavers tend to shift. A base that moves leaves part of the shell unsupported, and the shell flexes where it was never meant to.

Can you put a hot tub in a garage or indoors?

Yes, with three things settled first: a floor that carries the load, a way for spilled water to drain, and a way to get the humidity out. PDC asks for a floor rated for a constant 100 lb per sq ft and recommends a floor drain and a dehumidifier; Hot Spring asks for flooring that grips when wet and a floor drain in a new room. Have a builder or engineer check the floor before the tub goes in. Swim spas are several times heavier: see swim spa site prep.

Common questions

Can you put a hot tub on a deck?

Only if the deck is built for it. A full six-seater puts a median 81 lb/sq ft on its base, while the IRC designs an ordinary deck for a 40 lb per sq ft live load. Marquis and PDC ask for a deck rated for 100 lb per sq ft and Cal Spas for 150. Have a builder or engineer check the deck.

How thick should a concrete pad be for a hot tub?

At least 4 in, reinforced with rebar or mesh, say Hot Spring, Bullfrog and PDC. PDC adds footers below the frost line at the edges and calls 8 x 8 ft its standard slab.

Can you put a hot tub on pavers?

It depends on the maker. Bullfrog accepts pavers or bricks, Hot Spring accepts bricks set level under the whole spa but warns they can settle, PDC says pavers tend to shift, and Cal Spas calls them not adequate.

Can you put a hot tub on gravel?

Some makers allow it. Bullfrog accepts pea gravel or crushed rock, Dimension One accepts gravel that can carry the load, and Cal Spas says gravel is not adequate. Read the manual for your model first.

Can you put a hot tub on grass?

No. PDC says never directly on sand or grass, and Cal Spas lists dirt and sand as inadequate. Soft ground settles under the weight and the tub goes out of level.

Does the warranty cover damage from a bad base?

Usually not. Hot Spring and Cal Spas both exclude damage caused by an inadequate foundation, and Hot Spring's warranty applies only on a level, stable, properly built base.
