Our verdict: Nice to have
Hot tub circulation pumps
Short answer
A circulation pump moves water through the filter and heater on a fraction of a jet pump's power. 134 of the 390 hot tubs we track list one as standard and 74 as an option; 73 say they have none.

Nice to have
Prefer a circulation pump for quiet, low-power filtering. California's Energy Commission credits one with nearly 15% energy savings. Marquis tubs have none, so a $490 jet pump runs the filter hours that a $289 to $329 Laing circulation pump would otherwise handle.
What does a hot tub circulation pump do?
Hot tub water has to pass through the filter and the heater for hours every day. On a tub without a circulation pump, the jet pump does that job on its low speed. That is a big motor doing light work, which wastes power: California's Energy Commission found two-speed pumps are inefficient in standby for exactly that reason. A circulation pump is a small, quiet pump built to run for hours. A common one, the Laing E10, is rated at 65 watts and about 14 gallons a minute, for continuous duty. Master Spas puts the draw at about 0.45 amps, against 3 to 4 amps for a two-speed pump on low.
Does a circulation pump save energy?
Usually. The Commission estimates a separate low-wattage circulation pump can save nearly 15% of a spa's energy and up to half of the pumping energy used for filtering. Some makers also route the pump's waste heat into the water; Caldera says most of its circulation pump's energy ends up as heat in the tub. In California's test results, tubs that list a circulation pump as standard drew a median 83% of the state's limit for their size, against 89% for tubs that list none. Those groups differ in brand and insulation too, so judge a tub by what it costs to keep hot, not by the pump alone.
Does a circulation pump need to run 24 hours?
Makers disagree. Hot Spring and Caldera run theirs around the clock; Jacuzzi describes the pump on its J-300, J4 and J5 as an 8-hour pump. Marquis uses none and filters on its main pump's low speed for about 2.5 hours a day. CDC's Legionella toolkit, written for public and commercial hot tubs, tells operators to keep water flowing across the filter 24 hours a day. Master Spas, which offers its pump as an option, says standard filtration without one keeps the water clean enough.
What are the downsides of a circulation pump?
It is one more part that runs all day and will wear out. Leslie's puts the average life at about 7 to 9 years, shortened by continuous running, and notes a replacement must match the voltage, amperage and fittings exactly. A spa retailer lists the extra up-front cost and more plumbing connections that can leak. Ask what a replacement costs and whether it is a standard part. What to ask the dealer
- Does it have a separate circulation pump, and does it run 24 hours?
- What does a replacement circulation pump cost, and is it a standard part?

What the research says
11 findings
- Government The California Energy Commission found two-speed pumps are inefficient in standby because the motor is lightly loaded, and that a small circulator pump saves more energy than the low speed on a big pump.
- Government The CEC report says adding a separate low-wattage circulation pump can save nearly 15% of a spa's energy use and up to half of the pumping energy used for circulation and filtering. It also notes some makers put the pump's waste heat into the water.
- Government The CEC report observed that many entry-level spas have only one two-speed pump, while mid- to high-end spas use circulator pumps to save energy.
- Trade A common spa circulation pump, the Laing E10, is listed at 65 W and about 14 GPM maximum, built for continuous duty.
- Maker Master Spas itself says a hot tub's standard filtration without a circulation pump is adequate to keep water clean, and presents the circulation pump as making water care easier. It cites about 0.45 A draw versus 3-4 A for a two-speed pump on low.
- Trade A spa retailer lists the downsides of a circulation pump as higher upfront cost and more plumbing connections that can leak.
- Technician Leslie's puts average circulation pump life at about 7 to 9 years, shortened by continuous running, and notes replacements must match voltage, amperage and fittings exactly.
- Government CDC's Legionella control toolkit for hot tubs, written for public and commercial operators, tells them to keep steady water flow across the filter 24 hours a day and to replace water on a schedule based on bather load.
- Maker Marquis uses no circulation pump, filtering on its main pump's low speed about 2.5 hours a day.
- Trade A parts store lists the MRQ630-6101 replacement jet pump for Marquis tubs at $489.77.
- Trade A parts store lists Laing E14 circulation pumps at $288.77 to $328.77.
Common questions
Do I need a circulation pump in my hot tub?
No, but it helps. Without one, the jet pump filters and heats on low speed, which uses more power. California's Energy Commission estimates a separate circulation pump can save nearly 15% of a spa's energy.
How long does a hot tub circulation pump last?
Leslie's puts the average life at about 7 to 9 years, shortened by running continuously.
How much power does a hot tub circulation pump use?
Very little next to a jet pump. A common model, the Laing E10, is rated at 65 watts; Master Spas cites about 0.45 amps against 3 to 4 amps for a two-speed pump on low.
