Is a hot tub worth it?

Short answer

It is worth it if you will use it often. On top of the price and the install, a typical 6-seat tub costs about $27 a month to keep hot at the US average electricity rate, plus water care and a few parts that wear out. The Energy Commission puts the average life of a spa at about ten years.

What is owning a hot tub like?

The cover comes off, you soak, the cover goes back on. Between soaks the tub keeps itself hot and filters on a timer. Looking after the water takes three habits: test and adjust it for a few minutes several times a week, clean the filter about once a month, and drain and refill every few months. See the hot tub maintenance schedule.

The value is in the use. A tub you use four nights a week costs the same to keep hot as one you use twice a month, so count the soaks you will really take.

Standby is what a covered, idle tub draws in California's test. Costs use 18.19¢ per kWh, the US residential average for January to July 2026.

Most of a tub's energy is spent while nobody is in it: California's Energy Commission found that standby, a covered tub holding its temperature, is typically about 75% of a spa's lifetime energy use.

Does a hot tub add value to a home?

Don't count on it. Appraisers value permanent fixtures, so a portable hot tub that sits on a pad doesn't enter the valuation. A Cleveland appraiser interviewed by HomeLight had seen no market data showing freestanding tubs add much, if any, value; built-in tubs added little on their own, and a broken one could lower the price. Buy one for yourself, not for the sale.
