What a hot tub smell is telling you
Short answer
A strong chlorine smell means spent chlorine (chloramines), not too much chlorine; a musty smell points to bacteria or algae. CDC says a strong chemical smell signals a problem, and both fixes start with a shock and a pH check.
Why does my hot tub smell like chlorine?
Free chlorine has no smell. The sharp pool smell is chloramines, chlorine that has already reacted with sweat, oils and urine, and a shock burns them off. So a strong chlorine smell usually means too little working chlorine, not too much. CDC lists a strong chemical smell as a sign of a problem. Bromine tubs smell less once the sanitizer is spent, because bromamines have no sharp odor.
Why does my hot tub smell musty?
Something is growing. Hot Spring's table puts a musty smell down to bacteria or algae and says to shock, then drain, clean and refill if it is visible or won't go away. If the smell returns soon after, Master Spas points to the plumbing and a system flush; see biofilm and line flushing. A mildew smell when you lift the lid can be the cover itself: see hot tub cover care.
What about other smells?
Neither CDC nor the six manuals we read lists fishy, sulfur or other specific smells. Work through the same checks: test sanitizer and pH, shock, clean the filter, and drain and refill if it lingers.
How much to add
The product label sets the dose, by your tub's gallons.
Strengths differ between brands of the same chemical, so we don't print amounts. Test, read the label, add a little at a time with the jets running, wait, and test again. Your tub's gallons are in its manual or in our gallons and filter size table.
Common questions
Why does my hot tub smell like chlorine?
Chloramines, chlorine that has already reacted with body waste. Free chlorine has no smell, so shock the water and check pH.
How do I get rid of a musty hot tub smell?
Shock the water to kill bacteria or algae. If it is visible or persists, drain, clean and refill, and consider a line flush before draining.
Is a strong-smelling hot tub safe?
CDC says a strong chemical smell indicates a problem. Test and fix sanitizer and pH before using it.
