Why is my hot tub water cloudy?

Short answer

Cloudy hot tub water usually comes from a dirty filter, low sanitizer, high pH or alkalinity, or water that is simply old. Clean the filter, balance and shock, and drain and refill if it stays cloudy, the order Hot Spring's and Master Spas' tables give.

What makes hot tub water cloudy?

Cloudiness is particles hanging in the water: skin oils, soap, organic matter, or minerals falling out of solution, all on Hot Spring's list of causes. Each cause in the table either adds particles or stops the filter and sanitizer from removing them. High pH is a double hit: Hot Spring says it clouds the water and lays scale, and Master Spas lists poor chlorine efficiency as another result.

How do you clear cloudy hot tub water?

  1. Clean or swap the filter; it is the most common cause. See how to clean a hot tub filter.
  2. Test and fix alkalinity, then pH.
  3. Bring sanitizer up to your range and shock the water.
  4. Run the jets with the cover open, then let the filter work for a few cycles.
  5. Still cloudy: drain, clean the shell and refill, the last step in both makers' tables.

How much to add

The product label sets the dose, by your tub's gallons.

Strengths differ between brands of the same chemical, so we don't print amounts. Test, read the label, add a little at a time with the jets running, wait, and test again. Your tub's gallons are in its manual or in our gallons and filter size table.

Why is my hot tub cloudy after a refill?

New water brings its own minerals and metals. Master Spas says to fill through a pre-filter and add a sequestering agent at every fill, then let it circulate before adding other chemicals. If your water is hard, calcium can cloud it as soon as it heats; see calcium hardness.

Can you use a hot tub with cloudy water?

Better not. Master Spas' standard for good water is a clear view of the bottom, and cloudy water often means sanitizer is losing. Test it first; if chlorine and pH are off, fix them before anyone gets in.

Common questions

How do I fix cloudy hot tub water fast?

Clean the filter, balance alkalinity and pH, bring sanitizer up and shock, then run the jets. If it is still cloudy, drain and refill.

Why is my hot tub cloudy but the chemicals are fine?

Usually a dirty filter or old water. Master Spas lists dirty filters and old water as causes even when chemistry tests fine.

Can high pH make a hot tub cloudy?

Yes. Hot Spring's manual says water above pH 7.8 can turn cloudy and form scale.
