Starting up a hot tub: fill, balance, then sanitize

Short answer

Fill through the filter compartment with a hose pre-filter, add a metal sequestrant, balance alkalinity, pH and calcium, then add sanitizer last. Master Spas' manual says chlorine goes in only once the balance is right.

A first year with a hot tub: day 1 fill, balance, then sanitize; month 1 test every day; clean the filter every month; drain and refill at months 3 to 4; month 12 a new filter, and a new UV lamp if the manual says so
A first year with a hot tub, from the first fill on.

How do you start up a hot tub, step by step?

  1. Fill with fresh tap water through a pre-filter, no more than half softened water.
  2. Add a sequestering (stain and scale) product and let it circulate at least 30 minutes, or as its label says.
  3. Test alkalinity, pH and calcium hardness.
  4. Adjust alkalinity first, then pH, then calcium. Hot Spring sets alkalinity to 80 ppm and calcium to 100 before pH.
  5. Wait, retest and adjust again. Master Spas says 15 minutes; Bullfrog says 6 hours for balancing chemicals.
  6. Add sanitizer once the balance holds, and stay out until chlorine falls to a safe level.
  7. Heat to your set point with the cover on.

How much to add

The product label sets the dose, by your tub's gallons.

Strengths differ between brands of the same chemical, so we don't print amounts. Test, read the label, add a little at a time with the jets running, wait, and test again. Your tub's gallons are in its manual or in our gallons and filter size table.

Why does the order of start-up chemicals matter?

Each step changes the next. Alkalinity sets how pH responds, so fixing pH first wastes chemicals when alkalinity then drags it off again; Bullfrog says to set alkalinity even if it throws pH further off for a while. Sanitizer goes last because high pH weakens it: above 7.5, Master Spas notes, less than half the free chlorine is active.

What should you do in the first month?

Test sanitizer every day. Hot Spring says the first month is for learning how much sanitizer your household uses, so you can set a routine. If the tub won't heat or the jets sputter after filling, an air lock is the usual cause: see weak hot tub jets. For the list of what to buy, see hot tub chemicals you need.

Common questions

What chemicals do I add first to a new hot tub?

A metal sequestrant at the fill, then alkalinity, pH and calcium adjusters, and sanitizer last, as Master Spas' start-up describes.

How long after filling a hot tub can you use it?

Once it is heated, balanced and sanitized, and chlorine has fallen to your manual's safe range; balancing alone can take hours if your manual says to wait between steps.

Do you shock a new hot tub?

Master Spas adds chlorine granules at start-up once the water is balanced, and Hot Spring superchlorinates if chlorine reads below 3 ppm. Follow your maker's start-up page.
