Build quality report

American Whirlpool build quality

American Whirlpool passes 4 of our 8 build checks, partly meets 2 and publishes nothing on 2. That ranks it tied for fourth of the 15 hot tub brands we cover.

What decides whether a hot tub lasts is mostly hidden under the shell. We run the same eight checks on every brand, from its manuals, warranties and spec sheets, and grade each one Yes, Partly or No.

Self-supporting shell

Does the shell hold itself up?

Partly
Shell layers: an acrylic skin backed by fiberglass, self-supporting compared with propped on posts

Not foam-filled, but the frame and base carry the load.

American Whirlpool skips the poured-foam build, so the fiberglass-backed shell is not held up by set foam. The company credits the perimeter frame (steel on most series, treated wood on the 100) and the sealed ABS base as the support structure. It never claims the shell stands on its own.

Applies to: All models; frame material differs by series

Clamped plumbing

Are the hoses glued and clamped?

Not published
How a hose joint goes together: glue on the ridged barb, the hose pushed on, then a stainless clamp tightened; beside it, a clamped joint (good) and a glue-only joint years later, weeping

American Whirlpool doesn't publish this. Ask the dealer.

The factory parts list shows standard 2-inch glued PVC on the main lines with barbed take-offs for jets and air. Whether flexible hose is secured with stainless clamps at those barbs is the part that matters, and nobody has photographed it. Ask a dealer to open a cabinet.

Applies to: All models (MAAX-built spas in general)

Manifold-fed jets

Does each jet get its own line?

Not published
Manifold plumbing feeds each jet its own hose; daisy-chained jets share one line

American Whirlpool doesn't publish this. Ask the dealer.

There is no cutaway, plumbing diagram or manifold claim from the company. The only drawing in the owner's manual is a generic equipment bay that leaves the jet plumbing out entirely. The way to settle it is to open a cabinet at a dealer and look.

Applies to: All models

Standard parts

Can any repair tech buy the parts?

Yes
A pump labelled with the supplier's own name and number is sold in many places; one with only a house number is sold in one place

Gecko controls and Waterway jets, parts anyone can stock.

Current tubs run a Gecko control pack sold under the POWERWORKS name, and older builds used Balboa. Jets come from Waterway and Pentair with published part numbers. Several independent suppliers in the US and UK carry the boards, pumps and jets, so any competent tech can work on it.

Applies to: All models; Gecko controls on current builds, Balboa BP on older MAAX builds

Compression-fitted jets

Are the jet bodies held by a nut, not glue?

Partly
Three ways a jet body is held in the shell: threaded with a gasket and back nut that unscrews (good), pushed into a rubber grommet (OK), or glued in and cut out to replace (avoid)

Some jet bodies bolt in with a nut; newer ones may press into a grommet.

Parts sold for American Whirlpool include body nuts and gaskets for its Storm and 200 Series jets. Newer bodies shared with Vita press into a rubber grommet with no nut. The maker doesn't say which current tubs use, and nothing shows glued bodies.

Applies to: All series

Adjustable jets

Can you turn each jet up or down?

Yes
Three jet controls: turning a jet's face changes that one jet, a diverter knob moves water from one seat to another, an air control adds bubbles

Yes, most jets adjust. The small Euro jets are fixed.

Directional and rotating jets turn down or off, and the nozzles aim wherever you want them. Air controls on the lip and diverter valves shift water between zones. The footwell and shoulder Euro jets stay open because ozone feeds in there. The manual says never close every full-size jet at once.

Applies to: All models, for directional and rotating jets; Euro jets are fixed

Service network

Can someone near you fix it?

Yes
A dealer's technician close by drives a parts-stocked van to the house quickly; a home far from any dealer waits longer, and in winter a long wait can freeze the plumbing

Dealer-only service, 350-plus dealers, parts easy to find.

Warranty work goes through the dealer who sold you the tub, and the factory wants pre-approval for service where there is no authorized dealer nearby. Coverage is thinner than the giant brands in some regions. Parts are the easy part: at least six independent suppliers stock them.

Applies to: All models

American made?

Is it American made?

Yes
Yes: built in a US plant the maker names. Partly: a US plant and one abroad, with no word on which built yours. No: built abroad, with molded parts shipped from there

Built in Chandler, Arizona and Ottumwa, Iowa.

Chandler, Arizona: Headquarters and main hot tub plant, about 100,000 sq ft (2016 report). Ottumwa, Iowa: 90,000 sq ft swim spa plant, former Universal Rundle site, opened 2021.

Applies to: All models; hot tubs are built in Chandler, Arizona, and swim spas reportedly at a second plant in Ottumwa, Iowa

Common questions

Is American Whirlpool a good quality hot tub?

On our eight build checks, American Whirlpool passes 4 of our 8 build checks, partly meets 2 and publishes nothing on 2. That puts it tied for fourth of the 15 hot tub brands we cover. Each check is graded the same way for every brand, and each one links to its sources.

What does American Whirlpool do well?

American Whirlpool passes on standard parts, adjustable jets, service network and american made?.

Where does American Whirlpool fall short?

Self-supporting shell: Not foam-filled, but the frame and base carry the load. Compression-fitted jets: Some jet bodies bolt in with a nut; newer ones may press into a grommet.

Which hot tub brand is built best?

On our eight checks, Master Spas scores highest, with 7.5 of 8. A brand that fits your yard, budget and the way you soak can still be the better buy, which is what the quiz sorts out.
