Build quality report

Cal Spas build quality

Cal Spas passes 4 of our 8 build checks and partly meets 4. That ranks it tied for second of the 15 hot tub brands we cover.

What decides whether a hot tub lasts is mostly hidden under the shell. We run the same eight checks on every brand, from its manuals, warranties and spec sheets, and grade each one Yes, Partly or No.

Self-supporting shell

Does the shell hold itself up?

Partly
Shell layers: an acrylic skin backed by fiberglass, self-supporting compared with propped on posts

Foam is an upgrade, so the shell holds up unfoamed.

Standard tubs get recycled denim batting in the cabinet walls, and full foam costs extra. The shell is a laminate backed with steel and wood, and the warranty covers it against collapse. Cal Spas has never shown how the seats and footwell are braced underneath.

Applies to: The six acrylic hot tub series (Patio, Patio Plus, Escape, Escape Plus, Escape X-Series, Platinum); not verified for the Swim or Deck series

Clamped plumbing

Are the hoses glued and clamped?

Partly
How a hose joint goes together: glue on the ridged barb, the hose pushed on, then a stainless clamp tightened; beside it, a clamped joint (good) and a glue-only joint years later, weeping

Barbed and glued joints confirmed. Clamps are the unknown part.

Jets connect with barbed fittings and flexible hose, and the rigid runs are solvent-glued PVC. The factory store sells no hose clamps, which settles little either way since clamps are a bulk shop item. Nothing published says how the barb joints are secured.

Applies to: All models (from the factory parts catalog, which doesn't split parts by series)

Manifold-fed jets

Does each jet get its own line?

Yes
Manifold plumbing feeds each jet its own hose; daisy-chained jets share one line

Manifold plumbing, listed as standard on all six hot tub series.

Cal Spas prints manifold plumbing in its own series comparison table, which most makers never disclose. The factory catalog stocks manifolds up to ten ports, so jets get their own feed lines instead of sitting in a chain. Barbed tees are stocked too, so some runs are branched.

Applies to: Standard on all six acrylic hot tub series: Patio, Patio Plus, Escape, Escape Plus, Escape X-Series and Platinum; swim spas not assessed

Standard parts

Can any repair tech buy the parts?

Partly
A pump labelled with the supplier's own name and number is sold in many places; one with only a house number is sold in one place

Balboa or Gecko controls and Waterway jets, but fitting your own voids coverage.

Control packs come from Balboa or Gecko depending on the series, and the wet end is Waterway, listed under Waterway's own part numbers. The factory parts store sells to the public, and outside distributors stock the same components. The warranty is void if aftermarket parts that aren't genuine Cal Spas parts cause a failure, so buy from Cal Spas while coverage lasts.

Compression-fitted jets

Are the jet bodies held by a nut, not glue?

Yes
Three ways a jet body is held in the shell: threaded with a gasket and back nut that unscrews (good), pushed into a rubber grommet (OK), or glued in and cut out to replace (avoid)

Jet bodies bolt in with a nut and gasket, per the factory parts store.

Cal Spas' factory parts store sells body nuts and gaskets for every Waterway jet family it uses, at about $4 to $5. A cracked body can be unscrewed instead of cut out. One push-in grommet body is also listed, so a few tubs may differ.

Applies to: All series

Adjustable jets

Can you turn each jet up or down?

Yes
Three jet controls: turning a jet's face changes that one jet, a diverter knob moves water from one seat to another, an air control adds bubbles

Almost every jet turns to raise or lower its pressure.

Turn a jet face clockwise for more pressure and counter-clockwise for less, with the neck jets working in reverse. Air knobs and diverter valves control whole groups, and the ATS seat adds its own pump and panel. Cal Spas does not say which jets are fixed.

Applies to: All models; the manual says "almost all" jets adjust, so expect a few fixed ones

Service network

Can someone near you fix it?

Partly
A dealer's technician close by drives a parts-stocked van to the house quickly; a home far from any dealer waits longer, and in winter a long wait can freeze the plumbing

Dealers handle service, but the warranty terms are unusually strict.

Warranty work runs through your dealer, who may still bill a travel fee and a diagnostic fee. Coverage ends if anyone but a designated rep works on the tub, if non-genuine parts go in, or if you sell or move the spa. Cal Spas publishes no dealer count.

Applies to: All models in the US and Canada; other countries have their own published process

American made?

Is it American made?

Yes
Yes: built in a US plant the maker names. Partly: a US plant and one abroad, with no word on which built yours. No: built abroad, with molded parts shipped from there

Built in Pomona, California.

Pomona, California: Current 40-acre headquarters at 1462 E. 9th Street. Pomona, California: A UK trade report describes a 1-million sq ft manufacturing facility.

Applies to: All models

Not sure Cal Spas is the one?

The quiz checks your answers against 15 brands’ hot tubs and shows the three that fit, with the best-built one first.

Common questions

Is Cal Spas a good quality hot tub?

On our eight build checks, Cal Spas passes 4 of our 8 build checks and partly meets 4. That puts it tied for second of the 15 hot tub brands we cover. Each check is graded the same way for every brand, and each one links to its sources.

What does Cal Spas do well?

Cal Spas passes on manifold-fed jets, compression-fitted jets, adjustable jets and american made?.

Where does Cal Spas fall short?

Self-supporting shell: Foam is an upgrade, so the shell holds up unfoamed. Clamped plumbing: Barbed and glued joints confirmed. Clamps are the unknown part. Standard parts: Balboa or Gecko controls and Waterway jets, but fitting your own voids coverage. Service network: Dealers handle service, but the warranty terms are unusually strict.

Which hot tub brand is built best?

On our eight checks, Master Spas scores highest, with 7.5 of 8. A brand that fits your yard, budget and the way you soak can still be the better buy, which is what the quiz sorts out.
